Hi,

Right now, I'm first year student of Systems and Control Engineering at Sheffield, but I'm thinking of doing something interestng over the summer vacations such as get a qualification in area that would boost my CV. I'm not sure which qualifications to get. Is there a system and control enginner in the house that would help me choose where to start.

Why don't you look at getting an internship? A lot of companies offer internships to first year students and that will look even great on your CV, check out BAE systems for example, they have internships in software/systems. Worst case scenario you don't get an internship, you can always work on your own projects, that's worth just as much. You could look at making self balancing robot, or making a quadcopter that can hover of the ground etc.
