What sort of thing are you looking for? I've only seen Shackleton but I'd imagine they're pretty similar in standard. Differences are:

Jarratt Hall - 5 mins from campus in Selly Oak, self catered, meant to have a lot of international students.
Shackleton - heart of the Vale, home of the Hub (though this could be a disadvantage if you're quiet), catered. Very expensive but if you can afford it, go for it - wish I could!
Elgar Court - on the Vale so close to the Hub, self catered.

There are other ensuite halls too.

EDIT: You're not doing Music any more :frown:

Hey there,

From experience, Jarratt can be very isolating, as the only other hall it's near is Douper, and both are secured so much that it's a pain to go and visit someone (however, it's nice to feel safe!). I'm also not sure if Jarratt is on the internal phone lines... so that might be something someone else can help out with. Calls are free on the internal phones, and everyone uses them to fix nights out/help with work etc. I found (being in a hall without internal phone lines), that people can leave you out :frown:

Also - the en-suite debate. although it sounds nice - it does make it a little harder to mix sometimes. But I guess that's dependent on the type of person you are.

Shack... yes it's expensive... it's also on top of a club... which could be good if you don't want to get a taxi anywhere/go out in the rain, but it also makes it extremely busy and noisy, and I would personally just feel a bit lost in there really.

I've always heard good reports about Elgar. Relatively new - so should still be in nice condition.

I would recommend Elgar, but if it's really HYPE (and everything that goes with it) that you're after, then Shack's probably your home.

If you're undergrad fresher i would go shackleton or elgar. There are more 2ndand and 3rd years in jarratt. Though, it is much closer to uni...

My flats above fusion in shackleton and I don't find the music too noisey - there is a slight kind of vibration tho. I guess im on the top floor tho - it might be worse further down. I would def recommend being on the vale tho in first year. I looked round both shack and elgar before I came last year and the rooms looked pretty similar to me as i think elgar was built at the same time as shack was refurbished about 2 years ago, i guess it comes down to whether u want 2 be catered or self-catered!

I was having the same debate but after going to the accomodation day today, Jarratt Hall seems so quiet and boring! I'll definitely be going for somewhere on the Vale

Reply 6

Definitely got to be Shackleton or Elgar Court! Without a doubt! x

In Jarratt's defence...
Yesterday the flat I went to look around the people were super nice and friendly, it had a real laid back feel to it, the bedroom I saw was slightly bigger then any other bedroom I saw at other acomo... There was a nice kitchen/social area and altho it was quieter the perks included... not being a trek away from the pub, being able to concentrate when studying and a smaller community feel... but maybe if its hype you're after the vale would be better

Yea after the accom. open day i'm defo choosing shackleton. I just hope it's not too late!

Reply 9

Me too. I think a lot of people would have waited for the accommodation open day though, unless they have friends who go there who informed them before hand. Also, I think because Shackleton is the most expensive, people might not neccessarily have chosen it, especially if they didn't go to the open day and see how nice it was! Oh well, good luck to us! x

As a current Jarratt Resident:

STEADY ON!!! We're not a bunch of isolated loners!!! Honest!!! Jarratt Has a capacity of 620 students. This year, just under 100 were freshers, and this september, there will be 94 Freshers. Admittedly, the rest is made up with international students & Postgrads... but as there aren't that many freshers, we all know each other really well, and get on fine... The problem with some of the other halls, like Shack, is that they're enormous, and it's hard to get to know people well enough.

I personally think Jarratt is awesome, I'm in a self-catered, en-suite, mixed flat of 5. We've got 4 pubs we frequently use, between a 2 minute walk, and 5 minute walk away. We are right next to the campus, and we are linked to the hallsnet phone service.

Douper isn't the only hall around us, There's Victoria Halls which are much closer.

One other advantage Jarratt Has over the other halls, are the events organised by the Resident's association. [By the way... I'm Treasurer for Jarratt R.A. so if you're a fresher here, I (or one of the Freshers Crew) will be the first people you see/ meet at uni] The Resident's association gets £104 per capita per annum, with 620 people, that's a £60k budget we have to play with. We organise events in freshers week, and after, such as trips to alton towers, go-karting, paintballing, bowling, balls, BBQ's, new benches, change machines, bar crawls, bar tabs, clubnights, you name it, we can probably do it. The Money we recieve is meant to be spent on all the residents, but as hard as we try, none of the international students/ postgrads come out to play... So we essentially have £60k between 100 people.

[And no, you can't just have the money]

Conclusion: Go Jarratt!!!

Shackleton is the best and only has just over 300 students, you will be labelled as rich thou cos you can afford shack. Jarratt is isolated and full of post grads who dont speak English so you wont get the perfect uni experience. Elgar is exactly like shackleton inside as it was built by the same company that refurbished Shackleton in 2004, but it is self catered and you have to walk to shackleton for meals and there is no central sociable area like at Shackleton with Bar One and Rios, it is virtually a palace! I am not biased simply cos i have lived there (here) i have seen them all and shackleton truely is the best but that is why it is meant to be the most expensive hall in the country. They put the figure up again by another £200 this year, all the money is going into the redevelopment of the the Uni's accomadation. o btw who are you Bobbit! its Thom VPF from Shack?

Shackleton's my first and Elgar Court my second.

lyrical maze, I did the same choices like you.

I love Shackleton but I dont know if I could be granted cuz I submitted my application not early. That was 19 May:frown:
