Hello, is any one considering applying?

Are there any current students who are at LSE who can tell us about the profile of a scholarship student they know.

Just wanted to know whether it was worth me applying, i know its gonna be v.difficult especially at LSE.

Just wanted to pick people's minds.

THANKS!

I've been wondering the same thing! Think we might as well apply...only thing putting me off is all that effort lol.

Yeh, it does seem quite an effort, especially the mini essays saying why 'you' deserve to get it. Also getting the reference, the teacher needs to have knowledge of your financial background, which teachers gonna know that unless the've known you for about 5 yrs. Personally, i changed schools for sixth form :s-smilie: .

Yeh thats what it was the last time i checked.
Who can apply? Is it only for students from supposedly "low income" families?

Yeah well it did say it's better to have a reference which can comment on your financial situation but if that's not possible, it should not disadvantage your application. I think my school have just used the reference for UCAS so here's to hoping they're true to their word.

Thinking about it, I can't see how many people would be able to get such a reference anyway- I was there for 7years and they said they were unable to comment on my financial background unless I provided some evidence, which I thought would be pointless seeing as you're submitting such evidence anyway.

do they not give any scholarships based purely on academic merit?

No.:frown:
I was thinking of applying for a scholarship, but as mentioned above, the statement about why ‘you’ just seemed long and all the extra work of writing another 750 words describing your future plans. However that didn’t put me off, but when I went to the open day, I asked a lady at the finance stall in the quad about the scholarship criteria they use, and she basically just said financial need!! So even though it’s a ‘scholarship’, its not really academic based however, if they were to decide between two people from the same financial background, then the academic side does come in I guess.

Basically, if you’re not entitled to get anything more than 75% of the maintenance loan (household income above 38,000), then I don’t think there is much point applying. (I also rang up the finance office and got the same response).

I don’t think its really fair that they base scholarships on financial need too, I mean people from low income backgrounds are already having their tuition fee paid for them in a sense and when it comes to maintenance and stuff, I’m sure many students who are not getting the full loan amount still have to face the financial downsides of living in London :frown:

Ahh well…that’s life I guess! EMA sucks too!!!

They offer academic merit awards for postgrad study. I don't think the same applies for undergrad though.

Nope, doesn't seem to be the case.

I just looked through the list of scholarships offered, and I don't qualify for a single one. Most if not all are given out based on your fee status, financial need, and country of origin.

i'm personally going to apply. my household's income is approx £20,000 so it's worth a shot at trying to get a scholarship. although personally i feel at times it is sort of undeserving as i have friends earning over £30,000 who get no bursaries, extra grants like i probably will, but at the same time get no financial support from their family/savings which is what the Govt i presume expect to happen.
That's exactly what I'm like KOS, my parents earn over the limit for grants, but there's no way they're paying for me to go through university! I'm in two minds as to whether or not to apply.... :s-smilie:
