Rejected from all 6 unis for Social Work (Chance of clearing)

Hey all,

I did not study a social work related course at college but rather a BTEC Nat Cert in Business. I had applied to 6 unis in Birmingham (Don't want to move away from home).

I got 4 straight of rejections from Birmingham (expected), Coventry, Oxford Brooks, Manchester.

However, I attended a group interview at UCE and a video test at Wolverhampton - however I was unsuccessful and am now do not have a place at all.

I decided to apply for social work from personal experience of bullying at school which deeply affected me. I have done a weeks work experience at a junior school in the office.

Now, when I attended the group interview and test everyone very few people were the same age as me, ie alot older than 18. Most of the people had either had personal experience, experience of working with people in a social work related job or had done the access cource. I found out that the course is VERY competitive with about 8 people applying for every one place.

Along with my personal experience, I wanted to become a social worker because it is a profession and you can get a job after the course without much hassle.

I am disappointed that I did not a get a place and get depressed at times thinking about it. My college tutor seen my UCAS application and said that It was the best personal statement she had seen in 16 years of teaching!! I really wanted to go straight from college to uni as I love the student lifestyle.

Now, I am going to try for clearing. I would really like a place at UCE or Wolverhampton as they are very close to me. What are the chances of obtaining a place during clearing????

If I did NOT get a place during clearing (which i figure i wont:-) I could get a years experience by applying for a job with the council for instance for a job related to social work. There are some admin jobs at drug places/ immigration which I could take up for the year and then re-apply.

I have also put my name down for this 'Computer Buddies for Carers' at this centre near me. It is a volunteering opportunity to provide computer help for carers.

So if i did not get a place during clearing would this increase my chance of geting a place NEXT year if I have to re-apply?

Thanks, any advice is welcomed

Ok im not sure about clearing so i'll let some1 with more knowledge else answer that for you

Sorry u didnt get in! I too live in bham and decided to stay in bham and i applied to bham, uce, wolves, coventry, nottingham trent, demokfort...they were the nearest unis i could find.......

i think it is defnately because of your experience as to why you didnt get in because 1 week isnt very much at all but providing you get some experience this year (if u dont get in thru clearing) i believe u will get in nxt year

even if u get like a normal job for the year (sales assistant or something) and do volunteering on one of you days off for a whole year i believe you would be much better off this is a really good site http://www.do-it.org.uk/

hope this helps and good luck...let us know how u get on

ETA: oh yeh and believe me i thought i didnt have a chance of getting into bham uni....when i got an interview i was like awww how nice of them......i went to the interview thinking its such a nice uni...its a shame i wont be coming here...i nearly died when i got an offer!

i went to the uce interview too.....in my group there was a man who wouldnt let anybody else talk (not good interpersonal skills) and when we did manage to get a word in he would butt in and ramble!!! so i guess we were all thinking ok non of us are getting in...well i know i was anyway

Hey,

I was in exactly the same position as you last year. Is there not another uni nearby that you could apply to through UCAS Extra? Maybe you won't have to go through clearing...

To be honest, I don't know much about clearing, especially with social work - seeing as people need to interview people to get onto the degree, wouldn't that just be wasting a lot of time, cos it could take ages to find out if you have a place or not.

I don't know if you applied to these uni's again through clearing would even change their mind - no offence, they must've said no for a reason in the first place...

I think your best bet is to go away for a year and get some work experience. There's plenty of things you can do..type in CSV into google and find the website for that..it seems like a good oportunity and I wish I'd taken up the chance to do it!

Residential homes with the elderly or with learning disabilities usually like volunteers...you could go to a special needs school which is always rewarding..in a day centre with the elderly or people with learning disabilities..I know there are plenty more, but those are just a few you could think about doing! Although I'm not promising you'd get onto the degree with a years experience, as you already know, it's a very competetive course!

Good luck with it, let us know what you decide to do! x

On Ucas Extra there is still the universities such as UCE with Social Work avalible! - Can i re-apply even though i got rejected??

Ucas Extra is showing that UCE, Coventry and Wolverhampton all still have places!?

Also, I've thought about becoming a ICT teacher, studying computing and then doing the 1 year PCGE i think it is, however i would like to become a social worker and that is my second option.

lol that is so weird......i was the black girl sitting at the very end opposite the "chatter box"

Id say why dont u just go ahead and apply again, im sure it cant do any harm

Its funny u might become a teacher cuz im currently doing a child care course so when i finishil be a qualified nursery nurse and usually people who take this course either finish it being a nursery nurse or go to uni to become a teacher (all my friends) but nooo not me lol i had ti be different......pgce is what i am considering in the future lol i want to do many things in my life

Heya,

Ok I myself have studied that BTEC National Cert in Business n thought ''OMG, im not going to get a place due to the course I have gained thro college''.

To better myself I done the Open Uni course in Health n Social Care to broaden my understandin of care and done a year's voluntary work @ a family haven where disadvantaged families come along with their children.

I found it very hard to get onto the first year I applied because I didnt have much experience.

With plenty of experience from a gap year, you should be able to get a place next year. As for clearing and UCAS extra, I tried it and had no luck with it last year, I got the same responses from all the uni's of ''We're sorry but were unable to offer you a place for the 2006 entry''!!

Hey, yes i would say i came across a bit shy but that man would stop talking. I have re-applied to UCE, I dont think i stand a chance but i shall see.

I think you said at the end that you had found the group interview very interesting to the UCE lady and I am sure you asked me how you got out of the building. I walked you must have got the lift!

That man said some very strange things - something along the lines of that he didn't believe in god but then he 'found' him and 'the love of god' or something!. I wonder if that asian boy who did 3 years experience helping out at the youth centre got in?

Reply 14

LMAO yep thats me i got in the lift alright...lazy me!

i know we must not judge but gosh that man was not right at all! i mean what did god have to do with what we were discussing?

Yeh i said that to the UCE lady (sucking up lol).

As soon as i got home i told EVERYBODY about that man..he's famous in my house.....the joke is he gave us his address too and i know the road he said he lives on so i was planning on hunting for him if i didnt get in.....u want the address LOL

im glad uv applied again....if they offer u another interview.....u will have a chance to shine without that prick talking over u!!....plus i can give u some tips on some key things to say if u want

u kno the written test....omg i wrote a whole page then when i reread it i thought omg this isnt reading smoothly at all so i tried to write it again got half way through and the man told us to stop so i had to hand in the old 1

yeh i wonder if that asian boy got in too....i wish every1 who actually wen to the interview would sign up to TSR and we could all discuss it here

Hey, how did you find the first bit 'speaking to the person next to you' for 15 minutes? and what did you write about?

Thanks!!

Reply 16

i think it was ok at the beginning cuz like we asked each other about age name education why we wana be a SW but after a while it got a bit tedious lol and we started talking about what unis we had applied to and which 1 we really wanted to go to (quietly so no1 heard LOL)

I wrote about when we adopted my sister and how it made me feel....i really wanted to say leeds social services are sh!* and they loose everything and make people fill things out continuously LOL

how did u find it and what did u writ about?

p.s have u got msn?....u can add me if u want il pm u my email

E-mail the university's admissions tutor first, as well as the other universities that you're interested in. They can inform you unofficially if they would be willing to take you if you just e-mail them a copy of your personal statement plus your predicted A-levels. Save yourself some time and heartache

Lu ke and x_beautyful_x, what date was your interview for UCE?! I was there 16th April! I also had one girl in my group interview who talked too much, not allowing others to talk. I didnt say a damn thing because of her! Not onli tht, she was reading from notes which I thought was wrong!!
