Oh god, sounds similar to a woman I was in an interview wit @ Glos uni. She was talkin way too much, everything I said she argued, interrupted people which was rude and basically dominated the whole discussion.

So do you both not kno if your going UCE then?

Social work group interviews are the worst! I had a scottish lady in mine, who rambled on for ever. It was so funny when i look back cos no-one could tell wot she said and other ppl would say things and she would say "Ive just said that!" LOL! I got in anyway and i hardly said a thing, and what i did say was stupid, so you have no need to panic. I did Health and Social care at college but my interviewees said the fing that got me my place was my experience i had worked at that time for 2 years as a community care assistant. There are ppl in my group who have come straight from totally irrelevant A-levels on to the course but everyone has had some experience of social care work. If you dont get in thru clearing, you defo need to get out there and do at least some voluntary work. Things like, residential homes, homeless shelters, Samaritans, St.Johns Ambulance, Salvation Army, childrens centres are all good. You can get there and if you believe in yaself, you'll show them. Dont give up and keep trying, but be warned, its a flipping hard degree, im in uni sooooo much longer than the other students and placements are real hard work. Its highly rewarding, but highly tiring at the same time.Ive learned soooo much tho and im a better person for it. Take care and i hope that next time (there wil be a next time!) you get an interview you dont have some 'know it all' sitting opposite you. And if you do just saying anything however random, thats wot i did! lol! Byebye x

Lu_ke, it's a bit depressing you got 6 rejections since to me you sound like you're the perfect candidate for the degree in terms of motivation to do it.

However, to be perfectly honest I don't understand your application somewhat. You say you don't want to move away from home but that you want the student lifestyle - you are aware that you're going to miss out on a (big IMO) part of student life if you stay at home?

Also, I don't really see how places like oxford and manchester are commutable from birmingham unless you've got a helicopter in your back garden. Commuting from one side of birmingham to another is surely hellish, nevermind another city 75+ miles away?

I would honestly reevaluate if you need to stay at home. If you don't I tihnk you'll find there are a lot of courses on extra that you could have a very good shot at and would mean that you don't have to use clearing which is a very stressful experience and means you have to make decisions for the rest of your life in minutes or hours instead of weeks if you do it now.

yeh i kinda agree. There are lot of jobs out there as well that you can do that you dont necessarily need the social work degree to do.However if the swk degree is defo wot you want dont let anything stand in ya way. If you really want it that much, think about being prepared to travel or move away from home. I didnt want to move away from home but i have and its not so bad, i can still come home whenever really xxx

Hi. I only ever intended of going local, ie UCE, Wolverhampton or Coventry. I applied for Oxford Brooks and Manchester just to fill up all 6 choices.

Did you have a group interview at Gloucestershire? I'm so glad I never had one when I had my interview there (not that it would've made a difference, I still wouldn't have got in!)

You're all so lucky to have got in with your group interviews! They are soo difficult, I had one at Hertfordshire; there are always those few people who just take over the discussion...so it doesn't actually end up a discussion, but just one person talking! My group were really bad; no one really worked as a team...I thought working as a team would be you saying something and then asking other people directly what they thought...I stupidly sat at the end of the table so I was kind of out of the group, but no one even made a slight hint at asking me to say something...and the stuff I wanted to say I couldn't say because I didn't want to interrupt! Ah it was such a horrible experience...Luke, if you've not got in, try not to give up, if it's what you really want, you should get it...I gave up on it but it's my dream, so I will go back to it, even if I have to wait til I'm a postgraduate!

TBH i really dont mind group interviews.....the annoying 1s in the group i obviously hate but i prefer grp interviews..........i think its gud because when u run out of things to say there is alway some1 there to have their say or change the topic.............both my uni interviews were grp and all of my part time job interviews (successful) were group apart from 1

Yea was for Gloucestershire. The interview process was alright I guess but i just felt like I couldnt get a word in edge ways and I also felt that the majority of people in the group interview all come from similar backgrounds n were able to relate well to the topic.

Reply 34

well i didnt see anyone else from uce at birmingham bar you and i think siobhan who wasnt in our uce interview but was the lady with the funky red hair, if she didint get in i'll be very surpised she had quite a bit to say for herself (in a good way) and was very confident. dont really know anyone else, i was the only social worker from my college to apply at either birmingham and us social workers seem to be the shy type in terms of telling everyone what we're studying so no not really.

Luke its a shame you didint get in because having met you i think you'd be an ideal candiate. I'm not sure where you live but if you have to take a year out do you have homestart near you? They visit familys with a child under 5 and help out where possible, a bit like a charitable social worker, you can volunteer as much or as little as you like, and they'd snap you up because theres a severe lake of male volunteers and you could still work if need be. They give you tons of training and most uni's snap you up as soon as you mutter the words home start

Yes i know who u mean, i really liked her too, she gave off positive vibes, altogether i saw 4 people from the uce interview at the bham interview including u. i cant remember now but for bham were u in my interview group? i know the split it into 2 groups who the people who lived far went first.

Reply 37

she and i were in the first group, most of us from that group caught the train home together afterwards, most of the people in that group that i spoke to said that birmingham was their first choice. Our group was nice we didint have any god men ROFL and we worked well as a group, everyone spoke and no one got left out. There were two girls that i think were sisters, i remember because i thought they were my age and they were only 18. The panel were lovely and encouarging as well lots of nodding and smiling while we were all talking. I'm not sure if i found it easier because i'd done it before but also because we all sat together in the canteen and got to know each other a bit better before we had the interview. I remember that lady who was pregnant i think she was called sue (dont quote me on it) was really nervous that she would go all silent and not say anything but we promised to ask her a couple of questions so she could find her voice.. which she did.

i looked at that website, it seemed really good, until it said you have to have parenting experience..which i don't have! do you know of anywhere else that is good for work experience?

Reply 39

parenting experience is open to interpretation, a lot of the girls on the course i went on didint have direct i'm a parent experience, but had friends with kids, or younger sisters and brothers, so its still worth giving them a call and explaining to them your situation, they also love student social workers or want to be social workers.

Other stuff that counts is volunterring at local schools, or as i think beautiful said is doit.org but i'm not sure what the exact web addy is, but it spits out all volunteer oppurtunitys in your area. I'm off to work now but when i get up i'll post some good good websites i've used for experience etc
