Any social psychologists?

Im 20 and have never been popular or had great social skills but how come older people, as in my parents age, will talk to me and say im cute yet people my own age tend to ignore me? I know I must be a nerd or whatever but if im being called cute is it because they think im simple (as in dumb or no social skills) or is it because Im small and look a lot younger than 20, which I do? Sorry if this post sounds childish its probably the way Ive worded it I just like to know how people think. Also Ive never fancied anyone my own age even when I was 13. So why do older people talk to me yet I only have few friends in my age group?? Be honest in what you think, is anyone else like this at all?

Do you know horrorboy? You two should hook up. You have a lot in common.

Well the first reason you gave could be the reason why you are 'ignored', not simply because they dont think your cute. Also, many people in their late teens (16-20) refer to cute kind of like 'your nice but we are not compatible personality wise' or perhaps 'i like you, but i dont fancy you'. It will probs be because your small and young looking, i get exactally the same sometimes because sometimes i can look a lot younger than i am. I mean i love cute people, they are soo, well cute :s-smilie: and huggable

I tend to have a similar 'problem' in that I've always gotten on better with older people. I do believe that being an only child doesn't help - and as I never went to school close to home, I grew up spending much more time with older people (my parents, their friends) than kids my own age, since there were never any I knew in walking/cycling distance.

I can't say I've ever been called 'cute' before though o_O... my point is that, if you are an only child, that's probably a factor. Also you may be mature for your age (as a cause or an effect... I've been told I dress and act like I'm 30 -_-; ).
Well if you look under 20 and are small, those are probably the reasons they call you cute, and if people really do ignore you maybe they just presume you are younger than them. I'm 20 and tiny and get called cute too even if they know my real age, A level results, degree course and that I'm in a mature relationship etc etc. Why would they think you're dumb? I think you're just a little paranoid

By 'ignore', can you give an example? Do you make an effort to be sociable? In what way?

Maybe people your age haven't had the chance to get to know you. Just as you make a connection with older folk, you need to make a connection with people your own age.

I try asking a question or asking what subject they are studying etc and they answer and then turn back to there group. Some people start talking to me proper but a lot are just not interested.
