I am currently on a postgraduate research program (MRes) and intend to apply to continue my research at PhD level. Can anyone give me any advice on PhD proposals?

The important questions to answer are :

    1) Why this Dept/Uni? (ie. their staff research interests, notable research group or dept specialism?)
    2) Why this project/title/idea? (ie. why is it 'important' academically, how does it build on current research etc)
    3) Why me? (ie. why are you the only person they could possibly consider for this place/funding?)

Thank you for the advice! Do you reckon coming from a research background will aid my application? Also, how long should a PhD proposal be? MRes was around 2,500 words...

Research experience always helps. Different unis may have different requirements for proposals so check with the uni. Otherwise a couple of pages should do.
