Best University for Sociology?

Hi everyone - glad i've found this site - seems very useful!

Which Universities in England have the best reputation for degrees in Sociology? It's my favourite subject at A-Level and I want to go and do it at Uni, starting in 2008.

I'd preferably like to study it at University of Manchester, which I believe may be very good for it, or University of Liverpool.

Any other Uni's have a good reputation for it? If no-one knows, is there any other way I could find out?

Thanks.

You can find out on The Times or the Guardian websites as they list their subject specific league tables on them.

LSE is apparently the best in the world for social sciences, so.....

Failing that, i think the top bunch are the usuals- oxford, bath, bristol, warwick, imperial etc etc.

I went on a student shadowing day for sociology at LSE a month ago, it seemed very interesting, very intellectual, with great resources (the girl was telling me they have original works of Marx and Weber in their library, which is almost dedicated to social sciences apparently). I attended a Social Psychology lecture, which was hugely interesting, and learnt that LSE has a fantastic reputation for Sociology. Be aware you do have to do one module thingy on maths though, as it's a BSc not a BA, and this girl said loads of people were put off.

I did consider it, but I think it might be a bit too difficult/studious for me, even though I love it at AS, as I'm also concerned about where it'd take me career-wise. Email Gino Graziano at LSE if you want to arrange to shadow a sociology student. It's very interesting and will give you a feel for what it would be like studying Sociology there.

Imperial and the social sciences? It doesn't even offer them really.

Oxford don't do it...nor do imperial.

Loughborough is supposed to be one of the best in the country for sociology too.

I have a few friends here at Loughborough all studying Sociology, and to my knowledge, they all love their course. They only have something like 8 hours taught a week though, there is a strong emphasis on lecture, reading loads, and then comin back for debates I think. But I imagine that is the same at most Unis.

Yep, I think first year sociology students at Exeter only have 6 hours a week.

The girl at LSE said they have 8-10, increasing to 15hrs p/w in the third year (this is all 2nd hand info though, so I'm not certain!)
