If you haven't been living under a rock all your life, you will know that it's 2016!

This year marks the centenaries of 2 very important events in Irish and British history: the Easter Rising and the Battle of the Somme.

*Do you agree with celebrating such events, or do you believe that the past must stay in the past?
*What other centenaries are happening this year?

I would say commemorating as opposed to 'celebrating'.

I support the individual right to commemorate both but don't think they should actually be government organised commemorations. DUP right to refuse Easter Rising celebrations

- Military Service Act 1916
- Battle of Verdun
- Battle of Jutland
- Great Arab Revolt
- Dutch withdrawal from the war
- BST introduced
- First use of tanks in the war
- Lloyd George becomes PM

Funnily enough I was in a lecture today on the theme of memory. To be honest, it's most worth remembering because it's interesting to do so.

As far as I'm aware they were not formally neutral until 1916.

This is the website of the official Dutch WWI commemoration and it doesn't suggest any change of status in 1916

Although that wasn't what I was thinking of. Oh well, I'll post it if it comes back to me.
