Is It Worth Taking A Level Sociology If You Take Psychology?

I've heard the subjects are both pretty similar but then again i've never had the opportunity to study either. I've read up on psychology and i've read a small amount on sociology and in some ways the subjects do sound similar but both very intresting. What does everyone think: Is it worth taking both Sociology and Psychology at A Level?

And what does anyone who takes Sociology think of it?

im doing A2 sociology at the moment and it is a great subject, it gives you a whole new perspective on society (which is a good thing) and although im not doing A-level Psychology im planning to do a combined honours of Sociology and Psychology at uni as the subjects complement each other very well.
Id say definately do them for A-level

I was really doubtful about taking A Levels in Psychology and Sociology but when I get to picking my A Level options next year I think im going to go ahead and take them. I've taken an intrest in psychology for a while now and I also think sociology will be a subject which I will take an intrest in aswell. At my school they didn't have a very good choice of GCSE subjects. If they had psychology and sociology on offer I would have taken them but they werent on offer.

What other A Levels are you doing?

& Thanks for the help.
Its really encouraged me to go on and take it as an A Level.

& Good Luck with your honours in Psychology & Sociology.
I would imagine its a really good course to take.

My friend does both, and it may be advantageous because there is theory and methods cross-over, meaning you learn them twice, which can only be a good thing.

I think there both good subjects to take at A Level and from what I have heard they both share similar aspects but are worth taking.

Thanks for the help.
I took sociology at A-level and I loved it  It was really interesting. I didn't take psychology, but from what I've heard from friends who took it, it's similar in some ways but more like a science, which is why I didn't take it even though I considered it. Lots of people take both though and I imagine they're different enough to still be interesting but similar enough to make studying both easier, so if you'd enjoy both, go for it.

Does anyone have a full list of A Level courses?
I'm actually not to sure of all the A Levels that are possible to take.

I know a lot of people take sociology but psychology is becoming a popular A Level subject aswell. I think I might consider taking both but I might change my mind by next year because I haven't seen a full list of courses. But hopefully I will like the look of the courses and take them. I think they will both be really interesting.

Thanks for all the help!

The courses you do at Alevel depends on your school/college as they will not offer all of them...so it may be better to look on their website.

I do psychology and sociology A level. They overlap quite abit....mostly with theory and methods. Despite what many people say i find the overlap incredibly annoying... yes it makes it easier but...you're forced to learn the same thing again (at AS and at A2) it is painfully dull.:frown:

I would say psychology is harder...although it may depend on the exam boards, i also find psychology much more interesting and challenging. I don't like sociology...but if you like both then it is worth taking them.

I can imagine that they would overlap because there both very similar subjects. I think I will personally like psychology better than sociology. Although I've heard that sociology is an interesting subject to take aswell.

I think I will start looking around different websites particularly schools in my local area to see if the website provides a list of courses.

Thanks for all the help.
I wouldn't say they were so similar that you shouldn't study both. I study AS psychology, it's probably the most interesting subject I've ever studied - but I'm finding it really difficult remembering the key terms and everything else you need to know for the exam.

A friend of mine does both psychology and sociology at AS and ended up with a D in psychology and a U in sociology. I don't know whether this was down to lack of revision or just finding the subject difficult. But the subjects aren't that similar imo and it'd be good to study both.

That's a really good idea because they should also tell you a bit about the course and which exam board you'll be using, so you can read the specification on the exam board's website if you want more information.

thanks  the other A-levels im doing are Art and History. Although History is one of the hardest A-levels it actually goes quite well with Sociology, particularly in the topics Education and Power and Politics

I've heard the subjects are both fairly difficult. I guess you have to put in a lot of effort and hardwork to achieve good grades in them. I think some people think A Levels are similar to GCSEs. But i've been told when you go from GCSE to A Level its a big change because the work is difficult and theres a lot more to remember. I struggle on remembering key terms in some of my subjects now but i've always had a passion to do psychology so hopefully I will take an interest in the subject and achieve good grades if I go on and take it as an A Level.

So far from what i've heard the feedback its a good subject to take.

A Levels are a lot harder than GCSE. In my opinion anyway. English Language at A Level is a lot different than at GCSE. There is a lot more to remember and for me, it's a lot more stressful than any of my lessons I did at GCSE.

I do both A2 Sociology and A2 Psychology. I didn't find that there were that many overlaps, and when there was an overlap between what I'd learnt in one subject and the other, it didn't bother me. I found that it gave me more confidence in a way because I already knew it and the other people in my class didn't. I like both the subjects.

I'm considering taking A Level english but im not to sure yet. I know that I will go on and take psychology and sociology and anything else I feel I would like to study.

Thanks for the help Sorciere!
