I'm looking to go to either Brazil or Indonesia with a friend, both of us male and 23 around July. We'd stay in mostly Northern Brazil where it's warmer, but any recommendations of places to see in somewhere like Rio? Is there much of a backpacker culture in such a big city?

I always wanted to see this cemetery in Rio - amazing architecture, if you ask me.

Rio is not in the north of Brazil. But it is a fantastic city with something for every budget. We went in September and were going higher end than backpacking - still cheaper than a European city, helped by their currency being in rapid decline at the time, but not super-cheap. If you stay in hostels, use the bus instead of taxis etc, you can probably experience it on a budget, though the big sights like Christ the Redeemer and Pao de Acucar are pricey.

I know, but I included it because it is generally warm all year round. What sort of things do you recommend for higher budgets? I'm VERY careful about trusting tripadvisor after relying on whilst I travelled across the states.

The cementry looks a lot like the one in Paris, awesome
