I want to apply to Cambridge next year, but my mum is really against me taking a gap year to do this.

If i accepted a Durham offer and started attending there this October, would I be allowed to apply to Cambridge for 2017 entry whilst still being at Durham?

    Thanks.

Yes. You may need a reference from your university though which will be problematic given the oxbridge deadline. It may be better to apply for a transfer into second year during your second year at Durham, that way you have a known record of your performance at university, your tutor will be better able to write a reference for you and you won't look like someone who's feeling a bit whiny after being rejected.

    This is a terrible idea.

You won't have a supportive reference from Durham if you're submitting an application to switch to Cambridge a week after freshers week.

Edit: the poster above suggesting applying for year 2 entry is also a bad idea. Cambridge might accept an application for entry into first year if you apply during your second year elsewhere - but you would then be starting again after 2 years at university and would not be eligible for student loans or support for your first year at Cambridge (IF you managed to secure a place).
