    Can anyone explain if (and why) waves travel faster in deep or shallow water?

    i'd guess shallow because it is less dense.

    i think they travel slower because they reach a different medium ect. They also refract. I think.

    YA they refract and also the distance between the waves decreases

    Water waves are slowed down as they pass over an area of shallow water. So they are being refracted; but they will only change direction if the waves hit the shallow water at an angle.

    When the waves leave the shallow water they speed up again.
