Can anyone explain if (and why) waves travel faster in deep or shallow water?

i'd guess shallow because it is less dense.

i think they travel slower because they reach a different medium ect. They also refract. I think.

YA they refract and also the distance between the waves decreases

So they go faster in shallow water?

...and when they are in shallow water the wavelength decreases?

So they go faster in shallow water?

Water waves are slowed down as they pass over an area of shallow water. So they are being refracted; but they will only change direction if the waves hit the shallow water at an angle.

When the waves leave the shallow water they speed up again.
