    Hi,

I'm a first year at Leeds uni and I'm supposed to be living with flat mates next year but they are all saying that they want to try and find a contract which starts in September rather than July because they all want to go home for summer.

For me it's not really an option to go home for three months since my parents live in the middle of nowhere and I've had mental health issues in that house and being there really takes a toll on me basically and I want to work in Leeds.

If they do find a house which starts in September, am I going to be able to find a cheap place to live for 3 months or is there some other solution to this issue which I haven't thought about?

I would like to live with my flatmates but I'm also a bit worried about this happening every year and I'll have to be paying for somewhere on my own every summer, but I can't really think of anyone else who I could live with.

    Thanks

It's very likely that your house contract would be for 12 months, so if they wanted somewhere from September it would last until September the following year. For this summer you should find there are people who've signed up to a 12 month July-July contract and want to rent it out when they go home- I see them advertising all the time on my old uni fb pages and my old housemate secured a house from July-September to stay in whilst he worked on his dissertation.

Find out if you can stay at halls over the summer. Some university will allow you to extend your tenancy.

lots of private halls will offer summer lets

also, I don't think they'll find many houses which are 9 month lets (why would a landlord do this and leave the house sitting empty for 3 months? unless they're going to up the rent to compensate) so just wait and see what they look at and it may be that they don't find anything or what they find is expensive enough that they might as well rent over the summer
