After gaining inspiration from various places ive started to try and notice and understand the things that people around me do, one thing that has come to my attention is that people often dont do things that will make them happy and are in fact rather easy. I found it really intriguing and i want to hear other thoughts on this.

A lot of people settle for what's "easy and safe" because the things that will make them happy are risky and the likelihood is weighted towards them failing.

I agree with that but i have always regarded gumans as creatures who chase what is right when it comes to justice and equality oj the bigger picture but then are unable to searxh for it within their own lives, its puzzling.

I see where you're coming from but happiness is a really complex thing, sometimes doing your favorite activity more wont necessarily make us more happy. Human emotions are much more complicated, most people who are depressed don't even know why, it's really hard to simplify a fix.

I think going the safe route is definite making sure you are never going to be left out from groups and be isolated, however the safe route to me is so stressing and frustrating that I never really seem to be happy if I take it...so I take the hard route usually which requires actually a lot from myself, because it means going against the flow and usually be isolated. The reward I get from this is that I know which are definitely the friends that I can rely upon and I don't need to force myself to do anything!!!!!

Old thread but since people are posting and it IS interesting... I don't FEAR happiness - I strive for it but
I haven't found something that makes me feel happy yet. Content/ excitement is different from happiness and I think people get that confused...

Perhaps we are taught inherently to feel guilty about being happy and that it's more of a luxury than for an instance an outcome of hard work. Maybe happiness is more seen as an emotion experienced on the weekend whilst lazing around, rather than on your expensive morning commute to your miserable job.

Perhaps they take the easy option because that is actually what really makes them happy, instead of what you believe would make them happy? Or maybe they don't have the stamina to chase their dreams, the inspiration/perspiration ratio varies considerably in people. Hard to tell in such vague terms.

It's because many people will go for the safe bet. They can either stay where they are, a guaranteed level of happiness, or go for more and possibly risk being sad. To them, the benefit of the added happiness doesn't outweigh the risk of the loss of their current levels. It's like gambling but with emotions, if the possible happiness of an event, say asking someone out, outstrips the possible sadness, rejection, then they'll go for it. Obviously though it's not as black and white and there are more variables that factor in, such as the likelihood of the event, etc.(almost no one will mortgage their house to get tons of money and bet it all in hopes of winning millions because the likelihood of that event means that although the possible happiness would be high, it's not worth it)

Hedonism covers this. People are not all the same, some do some don't. I think the main problem is this human idea of being special, which flows back to hedonism.

Depends on what is happiness and the person. Sometimes the things that make us happy are not really that important or will do more harm than good. Drugs is the easiest example for this. Being with a boyfriend who happens to abuse you tends along this line as well. Sure you two have had some good times together and he says he loves you - but he just blackened your right eye.

Extremes are always easier to use as example or to justify. Its when we get into blurred vision things are harder to understand, like porn.

Otherwise, as others have stated - some are afraid. To go for success. To be successful. sad but true.

I think it necessary to know happiness is only temporary. One should work towards Joy.
