cough cough cough

well just b4 coming to uni in sept last yr i got a cold, which went away in like a week, apart form the cough which stayed till past xmas. after going to the doc he gave me some antibiotics and it went away....for about 2/3 weeks when the cough came back again and lasted another month. that one went away on its own, but i now have yet another cough, and its really getting on my nerves, cos it keeps me awake at night and its really heavy wet cough so it really hurts! and im just fed up of feeling tired and worn out form coughing all the time.

im going to the doctors tomorrow, but i was just wondering if anyone had any ideas what they might say or do? is there any illness that carries a long term cough with it? i dont wanna just get fobbed off with antibiotics again really as they seem to be a short term solution!

I have had that cold for a week and found that eating sainsburys chicken kievs helps. But drinking doesn't. And coughing just makes me cough more.

if you can't post something helpful why bother posting at all?

Because that's what we do here

That is genuinely helpful. Try it.

Reply 5

It's false. Drinking helps any ailment.

Reply 6

Not when all I drink is shots.

Even lucozade nearly didn't help!

Reply 7

You're just not drinking the right stuff, apparently :p:

Actually, thats not too bad advice....it contains garlic (or chemical version of..) which is a natural anti-biotic. That along with onions....Try rinsing your throat with salt too, also kills stuff.

How about....salty onion and garlic soup? :p: ...Those suckers in your throat wouldn't stand a chance.....^.^

Have you ever had
a) asthma
b) excema
c) Hayfever
d) Any other allergies

IF not, do people in your close family?
And do you bring up much gunk with this cough? if so, is it more in mroning, evening or daytime, and what colour...

are you polish by any chance? it seems the done thing there to prescribe onion extracts as a cure all for everything!
had a patient come in other week who was putting onion juice in her ear to rid herself of earache.

I've had exactly the same thing ever since coming to uni. I've had about 4 weeks cough-free since september, but otherwise it's been me hacking away in every situation. Sometimes it's ganky and very productive (various colours Jamie), other times it's completely dry. Been to the doc's twice about it, both times decided not to give me antibiotics. Instead I got this nasal spray (Beconase) which didn't help at all, and I ended up just having a bit of very dark chocolate before bed to help with the coughing (the cocoa is a natural anti-tussive, and I tended to cough more at night when I laid down).

It's getting annoying now though - all my uni mates think I've got some chronic cough - which, technically, I do - I've had it for 9 months of the last 12. :'(

i went to the doctors with the same problem today and got asked exactly the same questions as these lol. I never knew that asthma excema and hayfever were related: but apparently the fact i have a family history of hayfever means it could be mild asthma. so have to try an inhaler for two weeks. fun fun fun. lets hope it works, this cough is ANNOYING!!

have you been given a peak flow meter or a trial of asthma medication?
AS the person who post above said, when someone comes with chronic cough one of the first things that jumps to mind is asthma.
even if you aren't getting short of breath.

Definitely no asthma, been 'tested' twice over the years, with one of the times being in December. My PFR was better than most compared to people my age/height/mass, so it's unlikely to be anything allergenic or the like.

It's just quite annoying. basically.

well that sounds like it falls under 'chronic bronchitis' really then.

yes i have athsma, went to the doctor about it today and she listened to my chest and decided there was no infection, so i have to try using my inhaler before i go to bed, and if that fails then start sing my becotide one again - i didnt know that athsma could cause bad coughs, and seeing as i got first bout of hayfever a few days ago it does all seem interlinked. apparently if that doesnt work tho then its onto chest xrays and the like. doesnt comfrot me tho when im coughing so much i nearly throw up, but oh well lets hope it goes soon!

Hehe, no. Half russian if you must know :p: ...but thats kinda near Poland I guess....I know its not the be all and end all of cures, but it certainly does help kill germs and stuff (in my experience anyway ). It was just a suggestion...

This sounds kind of similar to something I had. I had a horrible evil cough for about a year - it would wake me up at night etc., and I had to leave the room in lessons when I coughed because I couldn't stop and it made my eyes water (and look like I'd been crying). Also, then I started getting sick when I coughed. The doctor I went to gave me an inhaler, telling me it was probably asthma, and we did tests and so on - it wasn't, so I had lots of trips to hospitals for blood tests.

After literally months, they diagnosed me with whooping cough. They said because I had been immunised when I was a baby, I shouldn't have got it, but sometimes you can - because I had had the vaccine, I didn't get the dangerous version that can be fatal, but I just got a nasty version. Although it wasn't supposed to last as long as it did, which was quite strange!

Do you cough for aaages and then when you breathe in it's all gaspy and has a "whooping" noise to it (so hard to describe!)? That is what I had.

It could be this - ask your doctor about it maybe? But I think it's quite rare, especially as it's generally a children's/babies' disease.
