how much do universities care about gcses?

my gcse grades were pretty average (i've always been in top sets at school, but my year 11 just wasn't great and my grades reflected that), however I am in year 12 AS now and getting consistent As and Bs. If, say, i managed to get As in my final AS grades and predicted As/A*s for A2, will the russell group universities still consider me?
It's possible - some unis are stricter with GCSEs, some aren't. As long as the rest of your app is good, you should be fine. Good luck!
Depends what you're applying for. Some take them into consideration a lot more than others, the most obvious being medicine applicants. As for general, most Russell groups have different policies on them. They are normally used to choose between two applicants, if both are achieving well at A level, and both are par take in similar out of school activities, the GCSE's would then be used to help choose between them. I'd worry on your a levels over anything.
