That is very correct, to see why, remember that you can write x^3 as x^(-3)

8x74x3=84×x7x3=2×x7×x3\displaystyle \frac{8x^7}{4x^3} = \frac{8}{4} \times \frac{x^7}{x^3} = 2 \times x^7 \times x^{-3} now because they are the same base (x), you can add the powers 7 + -3 = 4 so 2×x3=2x32 \times x^3 = 2x^3.


Dont you mean 2x^4? Also, for the first part arent x^3 and x^-3 different things (how does it explain why?). X^-3 is 1/x^3

Ahh right. Yes, i know it but i meant that a power with a - in front would give a different answer to the same power but + (you said they are the same thing?). If that makes any sense?

I'm not sure I understand what you're saying.

If you have xaxb=xa×xb=xab\displaystyle \frac{x^a}{x^b} = x^a \times x^{-b} = x^{a-b}
