Ok just wanted to know if biomass pyramids are always the same shape i.e. in a pyramid not inverted because if each successive stage gets less energy from the previous stage, the next trophic level should always get smaller? Thanks

Yep, they are always pyramid shaped. Its only number pyramids which dont take mass into account which sometimes arent, e.g. Many fleas feed off one animal, which then feeds off many animals.

careful though- biomass pyramids don't take inot account the reproductive rate of an organism. say if you have algae as one trophic level, it can support a large amount of other life on the next trophic level, because although it dies quickly, it reproduces like mad. so the biomass recordings may be fairly close- although they shouldn't be inverted.

the pyramids can be inverted, just like pyramid of numbers. its only pyramids of ENERGY that is not inverted.

Biomass can be inverted due to high turnover rates, parasites
(excuse the spelling, iknow is crap)
