Anyone else got an e-mail from this UCAS Media company? I just wonder why they have my UCAS ID and my e-mail address, because I have never typed them anywhere but on the websites of some unis and of course UCAS. Or are they authorised by UCAS? Please move the topic if you think its the wrong forum.

if its from a UCAS Media company....chances are they are connected to UCAS lol

Yeaa advertising the "you go further" website. I wondered why my UCAS number had anything to do with the you go further website to be honest. It does let you unsubscribe from the emails though via the link in the email.

Hm, so they basically sell the email adresses of the students :s-smilie:
I was just wondering because their website did not clearly state any connection to the actual UCAS company, besides the name, but may be I was just too stupid too see it.

Lol. I think what Noxid means is that You Go Further is a 'scam' in that it's trying to be a popular student message board, and that it's ran by UCAS Media.

UCAS Media is just an arm of UCAS, and given that UCAS has all your e-mail addresses, they use this to contact you about the website.

It's not a scam in the typical sense, but it isn't a very good site as it's in it's infancy!

Well if you take a look at the website of UCAS media, it seems a little bit different
Advertising and Sponsorship

UCAS Media offers a wide range of advertising and sponsorship opportunities.

If your key target market is students wanting to enter higher education, you can be sure those students will be reading a UCAS publication, browsing the UCAS website or attending a UCAS student event to help them plan their future. And by advertising, you could become part of that future too. UCAS Media offers companies and higher education institutions various advertising and sponsorship opportunities to reach this audience.

And for You Go Further

is accessible only by students. The website lives and grows with students throughout their life at university or college, picking up from where the UCAS Card leaves off in February of Year 13, and going through to graduation. [...] The full launch of the website is in April 2007. However, a microsite was launched in November 2006 to encourage early registrations and student editorial submissions for the site.

A number of commercial opportunities are available across the website, including banner advertising, channel sponsorship, content provision, data sales, sponsorship and provision of exposure briefs, and participation in the student store.

Email Marketing

Email marketing is a highly targeted channel enabling you to locate your best prospects and therefore concentrate your efforts on those most likely to be interested in your proposition.

As with direct mail, UCAS Media offers targeted emailing campaigns enabling clients to target segments of the student market. An email campaign can also be tailored to complement other marketing, such as our bespoke mailshots.

By using the UCAS applicant database of those who have applied to higher education, or the pre-applicant database of 16 and 17 year-old students who have yet to apply, but have expressed an interest of going to university or college, email campaigns can be tailored to your requirements.

So I deduce they ARE trying to sell email addresses and information. Just interesting to know after all.
Well upon registering your UCAS account, did you tick the box 'send me additional information relating to UCAS' or something? That could be a possible reason.

ucas have to effectively "sell" our email addresses to get enough money to keep our application rates at just £15.

No, I didn't. I actually don't think its a big deal at all and I suppose 'scam' is not necessarily the most appropriate term. I was just slightly surprised to see the email since I hadn't expected it and then found the website of UCAS Media a little awkward.

Ooh, I think I did click that.

I understand that, even though I am not particularly fond of it. However, my initial point was indeed that I was not completely sure if this you go further programme was officially authorised by UCAS. It seems that it is and consequently answers my actual query.

UCAS media, from the quotes provided above from the website seem to be, shockingly, the arm of UCAS which deals with advertising. What they are doing is saying "hey, UCAS are going to be all over students for the next couple of years, if you want, you can stick a banner on our website".

It's nothing.
And the "About Us" section of the You Go Further website says the following:

"The You Go Further website is brought to you by UCAS Media, a subsidiary of UCAS, the University and Colleges Admissions Service.

You Go Further is a website available to students from application to graduation and provides students with a comprehensive information resource and social networking opportunities just for students.

UCAS Media offers a range of ways for businesses, organisations and higher education institutions to communicate with young people either about to enter or studying in higher education.

Our strength lies in our ability to connect directly with the student market through unique communication channels to prospective and actual university students and the associated audiences of parents, schools and colleges, careers advisers and higher education staff.

So if you want to talk to students, talk to us.

For more information visit the UCAS Media website at www.ucasmedia.com"

So the site is ran by UCAS Media, UCAS Media is obviously just a bit of UCAS. UCAS has the contact details for students who registered with the Online Applications, and who didn't opt out of relevent 3rd Party contact.

They are simply creating somewhere for folk to talk and find advice. They're also creating opportunities for other companies to get onboard, such as Lonely Planet who are the latest to join, to advertise to a student market.

There's no evidence of them "selling" the email addresses of students, they don't need to, they're a subsidary of UCAS.

Yes Expression it is not a very good site. Its arranged poorly, meaning that if I wanted to answer questions or contribute to helping Newcastle students I have to do loads of effing work, yet here I can just check the sub forum and answer the odd PM. I am continuously pushing TSR, if you check out user "bluenoxid" it is under cool student forum.
Nearly scared me there for a moment with the heading
I joined out of curiosity after, found its too hard to find people at the unis i applied. Not very helpful overall.
