Whats it like at Hull University?

From what I've heard from many people and a pretty funny UrbanDictionary link, Hull uni isnt the best place to be. But I wanted to hear it from anyone who is studying there currently, is it as bad as its portrayed to be?

Hey,

There was a great thread put together by @Puddles the Monkey giving people 15 reasons why Hull is an objectively amazing city to go to university.

Also, you could perhaps try posting in the Hull University forum asking about the current Hull students' experiences, because there is more of a chance people will find your thread there!

You don't need to worry about the city - I mean it's not great but it's nowhere near as bad as people make out

The city isn't that bad - it depends on what you want. It's kind of trendy to bash on Hull but it's definitely not the worst place you could be....! :h: For day to day life as a student it's great, very cheap, the area around the uni is very nice, good pubs, cafes and restaurants, good enough music scene, etc.

Not got much by way of art galleries, museums, and that kind of thing. Also doesn't get many big name bands playing gigs. But other than that it's lovely.

I'm in my fourth year of my degree at the University of Hull and I've really loved it here. I've found it is far better than it's reputation and I'm really glad that I ended up here. I'm happy to answer any more specific questions you may have.

What did you study Star?

Since Hulls relatively small compared with the bigger cities, do you feel you missed out on experiences that they can provide?

I'll come back to you when I can think of some better questions

I'm currently studying MPhys Physics (so I'm doing a Masters without graduating first).

No? Not really. If you mean in terms of night life, then while Hull might not have quite as many or maybe as big clubs, there's still some good ones where I've had really good nights. I'm originally from Sheffield and I actually prefer going out in Hull. However I should say I'm not the biggest drinker though I do enjoy some, so I might not be the best judge.

In terms of other things to do, I've not struggled to find things, Hull has cinemas, bowling, laser quest, big fun (kids play area but can be booked out for adults), ice skating, climbing and stuff like that. On top of that the university has societies and sports clubs for most things. There are plenty of restaurants and pubs too. I'm not really sure what I'm missing out on here.

I hope this helps~

Yeah that's great thank you!

I ended up driving past the University this weekend after visiting Amsterdam:bong:. Although the outskirts of Hull looked rough the University and it's surrounding area's looked quite nice

Yeah, as a student you probably wouldn't have reason to visit the rougher areas of Hull.

I hope Amsterdam was nice. That's actually another good thing about the uni, because the ferries go from Hull it is really easy to do a weekend trip to Amsterdam/Rotterdam/Bruges. I booked a minicruise to Amsterdam yesterday for the start of March and I spent Valentines Day last year in Bruges.

Haha yeah I wouldn't if I could avoid it
It was great thanks!
Yeah true. Although it has has poorer access to other cities in the UK, it provides the alternative of visiting Europe.

Any chance you know anything about the Business school? I assume not from personal experience but maybe through peers?

Yeah, it does kinda suck a little that it's not on an of the main train lines. I've not had too many problems with that but that's because I've only really got trains to Sheffield/Doncaster/Kings Cross which there are direct trains to. Will you be travelling far if you come to Hull?

Unfortunately, I don't think I can really help you much in regards to that course. Other than having a few lectures in the computer suite in Esc, the building where I think they are based, I don't really know much about them. The Business school buildings do look quite nice though. I also get the feeling that the Business School gets a lot of international students too, hope that isn't an issue. (That's only judging from an Investment Mathematics free elective I did, which lots of people from the Business School also did.)

I live in Wakefield so it'll a 50 minute drive or 2 hours by train...
That's no problem, was worth a try haha. Yeah i've seen pictures from the outside, I'll be going to one of the applicant days at some point to have a look  I've never really experienced international students before so i don't have an opinion on them :dontknow:

Thanks for all the help you're a... Star :colondollar:
