There will almost certainly be a pregnancy test going on, and lots of questions about your general health, lifestyle, nutrition, medical history etc. He might want to examine you or he might refer you to a specialist, or tell you to come back in a few months if there's no change.

It will mainly be questions etc and he may want you to have swabs taken but these will be done by a nurse at a later date

Oh yes, because you can get pregnant without having sex

He'll ask whether/when/how etc you've been sexually active in the past however-long, before considering a pregnancy test. The rest of what the above person said is pretty much what to expect.

Probably ask you general stuff like when were you last on, any changes in your diet or lifestyle etc

He'll have 5 minutes to see you.

He'll say "are you stressed?"; "doing exams?"; "dieting?"; "could you be pregnant?"

If the answer to any of the first three is "yes" then he'll smile sympathetically & say "that's why"

If the answer to the next one is yes he'll say "have a pregnancy test" and smile sympathetically.
she may do an internal investigation which will involve her feeling up the vagina, and pressing down on your abdomen where your ovaries are to see if theres any abnormalities.
she may take blood to test your iron levels.

good luck and don't worry x

Thanks, I really needed that. But I'm dead scared about an internal investigation...don't really want anyone in that area, if you get what I mean

It's not that bad. I've had a couple done, my first one i was teriffied but it was over very quickly. It's better having it & finding the cause of ur problems

It'll be fine IF u need one:hugs:

yeh it is embarrassing to think about but its really not that bad. i personally would feel totally uncomfortable if it was a male doc but its bearable with a female one. just be brave, chances are you wont need it done anyway

I skipped periods for 9 months and never had to have an internal examination. No I wasnt pregnant. I had blood tests and an abdominal ultrasound to check my ovaries. That was all.

Thank you guys, that's really reassuring. I really don't hope I have one though!
I had this problem and I didn't have an internal exam either. I had some blood tests (which were fine). Mine came back when I stopped dieting/exercising/gained weight I wasn't even quite underweight at the time either. But if you're not getting enough energy for your requirements your body takes energy away from non essential processes or something. Whatever is causing your problem though, I wouldn't have thought they would do anything too invasive on the first visit?

I really hope not! I don't think my problem is caused by dieting (have never dieted, believe it or not!), don't over-exercise and I'm not underweight (or overweight)...I'm hoping it's nothing serious but it's best to be sure I suppose.

I went for the same last week. He basically asked if i was sexually active, if i was eating properly, if i'd been travelling, if i'd been ill recently, n when he heard abt my lifestyle coz of exams, he didnt even ask for blood tests but told me to come back next week. hmm.

Same problem, more or less, and I was sent for blood tests. Along with a pregnancy test, it'll be one of the first things they think of. I doubt you'll need an internal examination on your first visit.

I've got to have a blood test. She said I might have polycystic ovaries, and told me to read up on the condition but not to get scared as I'm not overweight. But I've read up on it and I am scared I have it - it'll affect my fertility and I fully intend to have children. Help!

Don't stress - both me and my sis have it (I'm not overweight!) and its not all bad! You probably will have an internal examination if they want to test you for PCOS but I'm slighty concerned that you are so embarressed about having it done - what are you going to do when you need to have smears and have babies??!! Just swallow hard and deal with it, yeah its slightly uncomfortable and a bit weird having someone poke about down there, but it's over really quickly and for the sake of your health well worth having done - trust me, when you are pregnant they'll be doing allsorts of poking around down there whether you like it or not!!

It doesn't necessarily mean infertility either I know several people who have had babies no problems while suffering from PCOS! You'll be fine

Thank you for your kind words  I know it's silly being embarrassed, but I just hate the thought of it. How will I be able to look the nurse in the eye afterwards?! Oh well, I'll just pretend I'm somewhere else while it's being done, though it won't be pleasant.

And I'm really glad to hear that PCOS sufferers have had babies, thank you for that, it means a lot.
