GCSE PHysics - slip rings

I just want to double check my understanding

For a generator you have slip rings instead of a commutator so that the contacts do not swap, is that so the current is not reversed in order to allow large induced current at horizontal and low at vertical - i.e. alternating current.

If that is so then does the slip ring just keep the thing going round and round by brute force

A generator generally is a device for converting mechanical work into electrical power. This means that a generator typically is kept moving round by brute force of an engine.
