POLAND is to deploy a massive 46,000-strong army to boost its border defences as fears grow that the Kremlin is seeking to expand Russia’s influence across eastern Europe.

Poland is planning to ready a 46,000-strong force
The first unit of Polish troops in the newly created national guard could be stationed along the border with the Russian enclave of Kaliningrad as early as this year.

Polish defence officials confirmed three brigades would be sent to the country’s north east by the end of 2016.

Fears over Russian expansionism have been heightened since the annexation of crimea in 2014.

Poland is a member of NATO, unlike the Ukraine... Putin would be insane to invade Poland.

Putin could troll the EU by sending 200,000 of his finest troops to Poland's border and when these Polish border guards challenge them they can say "we flee persecution from harsh regime in Russia, we seek asylum in EU". The Poles will say well you aren't staying here, and the Russians can say "its ok we don't like your **** country anyway, we want go to Germany". The Poles will say OK and escort them through then they can claim asylum in Germany and then next time there is an international conference in Berlin 200,000 Russian soldiers turn up outside the state buildings to perform drill exercises and sing the Russian national anthem. Putin will turn to salute them as he walks in and will feel like the biggest alpha boss in international politics.

Poland isn't sending army there- it's a something like TA or Home Guard, made of local men.
And it's good, history shows that conquering Poland isn't a terrible hard thing to do, keeping it from the other hand... is rather costly. Having thousends of armed militia will not make it any easier- at least it would keep the russkie busy before the Nato would with help (assuming, it would)

This is all part of the posturing of the new hard right government in Poland. The reality is that if the entire able bodied male population of the country decamped to the borders, they could not stop a full-scale determined Russian invasion. The aim is to make a point.

Good to see this from our Polish allies. Russian aggression cannot be tolerated.

The last government was non too friendly to Russia and the Polish people to put it mildly despise Russia. I think the last defense secretary or minister for foreign policy basically said 'if Russians take Kiev, we'll remove them ourselves'.

But yeah.. this is the important bit. Putin does not have it in him to attack a NATO nation, if he did he'd have a prize bigger than a Ukrainian region.
