hey! v confused!! in the little AQA collins book it says that you can find the degrees of freedom by:
    (rows-1) * (times!!) (columns -1)???

but in the big text book, it says just categories, and you get different answers depending on which formulae type thing you use!!! (ie one of them must be wrong!!!)
how do you do it properly!!! i thought i knew how to do it but i dont and the exam is tomorrow!!!! eeek!

It depends on how many df there are.
If its a two by two grid, theres one formula, while if theres any more either way, its a different formula.
I actually have a spreadsheet i put together to calculate the 2 by 2 grid...
