how to drink alcohol

as quite a shy and introvert person i don't really go out to bars/clubs/parties often, so i very rarely drink alcohol in public. however my friend's invited me to her party, she says there's a bar etc. also i'm a bit worried about freshers week in september as well! i know that people who don't have much tolerance for alcohol should build up drinking gradually.

so...could anyone give any tips for drinking alcohol sensibly in public? any drinks that are more suitable for people who aren't used to drinking? or should i just get wasted to see what it's like?

i know it sounds pathetic but suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

Alco-pops are probably your safest bet are they aren't very strong however they do have alot of sugar and calories in them.

My advice would be to eat before you go out, and inbetween every alcoholic drink you have have a glass of water or coke.
Maybe have a few drinks at home to see what you like and also to give you a chance to feel what its like to drink alcohol before you go to your friend's party. A good tip to stop you being too drunk is to alternate alcoholic drinks with glasses of water. Never feel pressured into drinking more than you want to, it's your body. I drink a fair amount but have friends who don't and everyone's cool with that.

I would agree. Eat something a few hours before you go and stick to alchopops. Oh and pace yourself

Try a few alcopops like Bacardi breezers, they're only about 4% so they taste like a soft drink but after a few you'll feel slightly different, maybe more confident. But don't go out and smashed just for the sake of it, you'll only be violently ill, ruin your night and its not safe on the streets.

yes, like the glass or coke idea.

Perhaps you could have like a pint of lager and make it last for about an hour each pint. It isn't as strong as spirits, lasts quite a long time and doesn't taste too bad :p:

Just drink vodka, lemonade and lime all night. And when you feel like you've had enough switch to a soft drink. Then when you know how many you had before you thought you should probably stop you know what your tolerance is and what it feels like.

But yeah, don't mix drinks until you know what you can handle....then you can just go out and get smashed, but at least you knew what you were doing....

edit: oh and your tolerance won't build up slowly, the amount I needed to get drunk virtually doubled within a month of starting uni.

If someone offers you shots, don't take them!

Seriously, just take it easy, don't get wrecked, you might be put off for life, so just try some different alcopops and maybe wine.
Hmm wine is a difficult one. A few people I know, myself included, get easily drunk on a shared bottle of even rose! (and I am quite alcohol tolerant!)
Girls (generally) aren't huge fans of lager right?

Anyway, follow others advice here, Breezers and Smirnoff Ice, etc.....though expensive, will help you build a little resistance.

I don't reckon its brill to start on wine right away though, unless you, like myself, would enjoy the taste during a dinner or such.

Oh and yea, don't take shots....they'll knock ya out if you have no resistance yet :p:

Good luck  and enjoy

Oh give over, she should just go have a good time and get drunk, you learn through life experiences, ok so maybe getting smashed is a bit iffy, but going and having a good few and see what its like wont do her any harm. Just a good old hang over in the morning.

i don't understand this "drink alcopops - they won't do anything to you".

Of course they will! Most Alcopops are just as strong as beer (4-5%) and much easier to drink, you will drink faster, it will be easier to drink more and you are more likely to get drunk. Additionaly the high sugar content will probably make you quite excitable.

I would say the best drink would be a weak, pale lager such as Fosters or Carling. If you like it, because being in pints you can sit there sipping it for hours and no-one is gonna question your drinking rate. For someone thats never drunk before you will feel the effects after about 1 pint. (poss less, depending).

Mixing drinks (such as wine then beer) in any quantity is much more likely to make you sick, so not somehting i would reccomend for a first time.

Anyway, only drink if you feel comfortable with your surroundings and the people there. Keep your phone on you to ring home and make sure you know how your getting back/ where your sleeping.

Fosters or Carling? Talk about some tasteless lagers...
Alcopops is the way forward for anyone new to drinking. Cant taste the alcohol much and it soon has the desired effect!
Anyway I'm sure no-one at uni will judge you for not drinking, or just having one then switching to soft drinks or whatever. If you feel a bit too squiffy aint no point drinking for the sake of it. Then again you might try it and love getting drunk and become an alcoholic...let me know how that works out.

Freshers week isn't about drinking sensibly, it's about getting hammered as quickly as possible and making an arse of yourself.
