I don't see the association there. I see posh people as stuck up, and people who don't say thankyou. Then there's the homeless guy on the street who says thankyou for little things..

Its probably the social conditioning they've gone through to get there, and that everyone they hang out with always say please and thank you, and to be successful you've gotta conform slightly.

But the homeless person is not necessarily unintelligent. Stuck-up people might not be intelligent either.

 The thread starter seems to assume that 'posh' people are all intelligent.

In conclusion: one cannot generalise.

And then there's the homeless guy who throws away the packet of biscuits you just gave him. True story.
You can't really generalise like that. Posh people aren't always smart and smart people aren't always polite.

Or sells it for a fag.

It's just common manners. Regardless of social class everyone should have them. No one is better than anybody else.

Or the homeless guy who keeps you company for a few hours on christmas eve when you are stranded and alone because your money and mobile have been stolen! True story!
He even offered me money to get a ferry...

When im in a posh surrounding i.e on holiday somewhere or in a place full of creative professionals, they seem to say please and thankyou, unless they are stressed. Now are these peple polite because they consider ithers feelings or is it because they are clever and dont want to wreck their image of success etc.

Yoda is very intelligent and impolite.

He also finds homeless people generally very polite. This nearly sways him from his "charity is for losers" based morals. Yoda must take care to avoid the homeless when he is drunk.

Oooh, no, I don't find that at all.

Infact, I've found, in certain situations, that it's the other way round, that academics seem to have an air of importance about them.

However, I reckon it's more to do with whether they're got manners, or whether they're just bloody rude!

O.o

Intelligence and politeness in no way correlate.

I mean I guess you could make the argument that it is smart to be polite to people when you want to be treated well in return, but other than that, no, some intelligent people are *******s and some of the most polite people I've met were mentally retarded. Stupid thread.
'Posh' people are brought up in surroundings where manners are learnt from infancy as part of ettiquette. However, in lower social groups where money is lacking, generally manners aren't the top priority and aren't so important.

It's not to say that posh people can't be stupid and poor people can't be intelligent. Nor is it to say that all posh people are taught manners and that all poor people aren't taught manners.

To conclude, each person is different and each situation is different; you cannot make sweeping generalisations about intelligence and manners as they both obviously do not correlate.

God no!

btw what have "posh" people got to do with this?
The only plausible link i see is that intelligent generally means educated, which would presumably mean also being taught manners. However, most people get an education, and most are taught manners, so I don't see that there should be a particular correlation. Perhaps it was true in the past, among people of the same social class, but not today.

The most ridiculous thing though is the posh = intelligent thing, unless you forgot what you titled your own thread?
It really depends, some claim that they might be more arrogant. Hard to generalize.

I don't think those go together at all. I've seen smart people (and posh too) who look at me like they want to spit in my face and I've seen fairly unintelligent people helping other people and being really polite. I don't think intelligence and politeness go together, and also being posh and being intelligent don't always go together either.
