What is the difference between a university and a college? Is a college a 6th form? Which one is necessarily better?

College is similar to sixth form, usually for 16 to 18 year olds, though some adults go there to do additional adult courses.
University is higher education for 18 year olds and over. You don't have to go to uni but most people do because they want a degree.
