They don't work if you are completely deaf in both ears...
I'm completely deaf in both ears and I have a cochlear implant - obviously I don't have the hearing of a normal person but it helps me to hear....

Deaf. As much as I love listening to music, not being able to see my partner, family and pets would hurt me more.

My first response would be blind but now that i think about it being blind is like living in your own silent world, at least if you are blind you can hear your family and friends and talk to them.
