What do students do at the weekend?

I just read a similar thread to this over on the Warwick board and I was quite surprised to read that most people go back home every weekend, and that the university and campus is basically deserted at the weekends, with very little going on or happening. I guess I might go home some weekends, but I wasn't intending to go home every weekend....

What happens in Cambridge?

Thanks

A lot of people have sports matches at the weekend which takes up a fair amount of time. Other than that I think most people treat the weekends as they do any other day and just spend them working. There are often college ents on in the evenings (since there are no student club nights at the weekends) so people might go to formal and then an ent in the evening.

I don't think I know anyone who goes home at the weekends apart from people who have gfs/bfs back home.

Work during the day and the evenings off, washing, shopping for food, etc. I don't know many people that go home regularly at the weekend, only those in long distance relationships. In the middle of term quite a few people go home just for a break and to get away from it all.

At the moment its generally doing the work that I've put off doing all week.

Virtually no one goes home unless they happen to have a specific reason to do so. As for what people do do: extra-curricular activities (e.g. sport), catch up on work, college bar/ents (but no students 'go out' as such on Fri/Sat nights) - nothing out of the ordinary.

Weekends are for:
1. Sleeping.
2. Playing sport.
3. Doing all the work you should have done during the week but were too lazy to (why do you keep punishing yourself like this?).

Oh, but when you get to clinical school like me, the weekends are completely free 90% of the time.
Very few people at Cambridge have the time to go away for a weekend at all, let alone every week (in my experience)! I tend to do some sport/exercise, catch up work, do my washing, and spend some quality time with my girlfriend.

Same thing I do in the week to be honest, just without the lectures and supervisions. Work, sleep, do stuff for various extra-curricular things... I'd say that I probably see less of my friends on the weekends than I do in the week, oddly enough. Social stuff just seems more geared towards the weekdays as going out on weekend evenings often involves running into hoards of.. erm.. (I really can't think of a less snobbish word for "chav", and i don't really even mean chavs in general, just that kind of rowdy scary student-hating kind. I'm not a snob, honest.)
I was out in Cambridge a few weekends ago, I thought the nightlife was great! Lots of funky little bars and pubs with character (bar the Wetherspoons that refused me entry because I'd no ID - at 22 as well :p:).

It would be impossible for me to get home just off the cuff; the nearest train to my house drops you off in a village in the middle of nowhere surrounded by fallow fields.

Ahh, Suffolk life .
Weekends and weekdays kind of blur into one for me...except no lectures means I lie in. The college bar is always busier Friday/Saturday nights than any other night of the week, that's the main difference.
And some of us have lectures on Saturdays, so the concept of a weekend changes somewhat...
I'm sorry, what's a weekend?

Wetherspoons are absolute fascists. I have been kicked out of the local one here for that reason at lunch time!!

Yep, you're not wrong Solemn. The big burly man who refused me entry actually said "Well, it's a compliment innit." I mumbled that I'd rather get some cheap drinks than be complimented.

Moreover, he also had a small postage-stamp tash, and shouted "Mein Kampfh"... (and a t-shirt that said "I HEART Mussolini".) Unbelievable.
Weekend is a moveable feast in Cambridge - the structure and timing of your supervisions might well turn out to be such that your 'weekend' happens on any two days during the week.

That's very true... there's just days, where you do stuff... if i had to pick something to be my decisive weekend, then at least in michalmas and lent, that would be wednesday thursday - i uauaslly do much more work on the traditional weekend that i do some other days, gievn there's no lectures

Evidently, from Friday night's performance! ;laugh; :p:

Ok, so what's it to be, red Leicester or cheddar?

Is that the one just across from Emmanuel? I got IDed there when I was down for my interview. Bastards.

I don't know if it's the one across from Emmanuel? It's the one that was originally an old picture house, and they've converted it into a pub. I've been in there before, it's absolutely massive.

As for you Solemn - don't compare me to that rapscallion Paul! If I'm going to force feed someone cheese, I'd disguise it... make it look less cheese-centric.
