Why does a chromosome have 2 strands? Watch

    What are these strands. I thought one was in inherited from father and one from mother but apparently they are both genetically copied,

    A chromosome can be singly stranded - i.e a paternal/maternal chromosome.
    When a chromosome is replicated the two strands are now chromatids which are identical - forming overall one chromosome

    It's quite hard to get your head around - you only really need this detail for A level Biology

    because when it divides the new cell has to have the same genetic info in it as well

    Replication is needed for meiosis to occur.
    Again this level of detail is only explained at A level
