Bad Sleep pattern

just thought id ask if anyone has any decent advice here. I know ive posted alot about my problems before here, but this time it isnt about my ex girlfriend for once! (woo for me)

anyway, ive never had a particularly amazingly regular sleep pattern, infact it were as bad sometimes as 6am bed and 10-11am wakeup but i could get to sleep within 30 minutes of wanting to, maybe immediately even. Ive been fine with a bad sleeping patter, on and off from nights to days without problem. However, recently, i havent been able to do that. infact, some nights not at all. I tend to find now that if i try to go to sleep, then i wont sleep, and then i end up irratated that i cant sleep in the end, and give up on trying to sleep. And if i do get to sleep, then i'll sleep only a maximum of 1 hour, wake up, if i can, go back to sleep, and wakeup within an hour again. Occasionally, from exhaustion i just conk out altogether when im relaxed and not thinking about anything for about 6 hours maximum, sometimes its just on off each hour as before. best intended sleep lately was 3 hours total at night, waking up the third time i couldnt get to sleep again. Best unintended sleep, was at a guess, because i cannot remember when i fell asleep, near to 6 hours.

I think the cause is that ive been moreso worried about my ex lately (dun dun duuuh), and its excentuated by incoming exams, courseworks, and the fact when i try to sleep i either think of the ex or how i cant bloody get to sleep! arg!

tried herbal tablets but they just made me feel slightly dosy, but not sleepy. Also made me burp a little later on that didnt help. Tried a mediatation thing about an hour ago, it wasnt bad, but afterward i just wanted to talk to me ex about why it had gone wrong! oh dear :s-smilie:

have you spoke to a doctor?

I'm in a similar situation to you, i tend to sleep during the day from 10am till 5pm, but still get a regular amount of sleep. I think you'd need to go see a doctor, see what they say. Obviously your under a lot of stress and it looks like this is affecting you a lot. I'm sorry i cant be too helpful but tis 7am and i've been up for 12 hours now

no problem im on 13 hours awake now lol, intend to make it till 9pm at least tonight if i can to try and correct the pattern. I should be so tired by then ill go out like a light anyway, with luck.

funnily enough one or two mates of mine have asked me to see a doctor or a counciler to try and sort the problem out :s-smilie: but all i can see a doctor doing is heavily medicating me and a counciler telling me what i already know lol.

although one of the mates seems to think its clinical depression but somehow i doubt that. Im not exactly a 24/7 moping around machine lol, but then again this particular person has seen me very little lately and only knows of my sleep and ex gf problem, not of anything else.

It might be a good idea to see the doctor though, it isn't always the case that you'll end up on heavy medication.

I'm doing exactally the same as you today, staying up till 9pm to get a nice sleep in but thats only because i have to be awake for tuesday daytime.

And yea, probs not clinical depression, i think you would know something major was wrong if you had CD. Nevertheless, you cannot rule anything out until you have a professional's opinion :p:

thats quite true but with current hussle and bustle i wont have time to see a doctor till wednesday. I'll have to make do if i decide to see one. Or, for that matter, even remember to see one... i flaming forget everything on a good day lol, i doubt the lack of sleep does the memory any good either!

do the stay awake all night and then all day thing and go to bed at 9-11pm.

Then set your alarm for 6.30am and GET UP

Go for a walk/run

Come back for breakfast at 8am.

Start revising. Stop every 40 mins for a break.

Have 2 more meals at normal times and go outside into the light several times during the day - walk fast enough to raise your heart rate.

Don't revise in the evening after 7pm - and just drink water - no coffee, tea, fizzy drinks or alcohol.

Don't watch TV in bed

Don't go online after 7pm - aim for a 9-11pm bedtime

You should be tired and relaxed by the end of the day

You really need a routine. Getting ready for bed at a certain time, no matter how much work you still have to do or what you want to watch on TV, and setting your alarm to wake you up in the morning. I don't do any exercise  but I'm sure that'd really help too, even just a walk/bike ride round the block when you wake up, or in the evening (but not straight after your evening meal.) Good luck, I know how horrible it is to not be sleeping well (though my experience of it pales in comparison to yours.)

Maybe best not to take my advice, as I tend to go to sleep about 4:30am, wake up at 8 for lectures then sleep again from 11am-3pm or thereabouts. But I find the best way to get to sleep at a normal time is to do some kind of exercise in the early evening (trampolining!). And to resist the temptation of the afternoon nap. I agree with whoever said get up early, do stuff, force yourself to stay awake, then sleep sometime before midnight.

My ex-boyfriend had a sleeping pattern similar to yours at one point, and was told by the doctor the easiest way to get back to normal was actually to go to bed later each day, being nocturnal for a while before returning to sleeping at night. This would have involved sleeping pills and stuff, and I personally really don't like the idea. I'd rather just arrange to collapse from exhaustion at 11pm.

I also have trouble getting to sleep at night because of my ex and exam stress. I take Zopiclone, use lavender oil, Bach's Rescue Remedy and above all, I write everything that annoys me down in detail in a book.

erm.. soddit... so much for staying up. i conked out again at some point earlier maybe 10am-12am region i cant know for sure. but i woke up at 5 so its nearish to 8 hourish of sleep ... kinda... :s-smilie: bah.

ah well, ill try and make the most of it... i have courseworks due tommorow, and things i could do on them. ill spend the night up doing them since theres no way ill sleep now after that much sleep.

i did write down my worries last night though, here and a few other places for other subjects, did help i guess WHEN i got to sleep lol.... just need to sort out the timing now i guess.

you could set a really loud alarm clock in your house that goes off all day apart from a designated time say 10pm-9am. but the downside would be you would have to buy batteries everyday and the noise could be irritating.:frown: worth a try???....

That never works for me..I get up to like 1000 and I'm still pissed off that I'm awake! I find reading a book helps you doze off. Either that, or agree with someone above^ pull an all nighter then get to bed at a decent time. Sometimes, when I really can't sleep I put both arms over my face and find that makes me a lot more tired and it's easier to fall asleep that way. (My bro was a postman and needed to get to bed early and this was the only way he could do it :p:)

Depends on the person, but pulling an all nighter may not work. I find that because I've been living on adrenaline all day that I'm over stimulated from the lack of sleep.

I have sleeping problems because at the weekend i go to bed at 2/3am and get up at 2ish the next day and then on school days i try to get to bed at 10 and have to be up at 5.30am but end up falling asleep at 1 or 2 and then hardly getting any, my weekends have mucked everything up :frown:
