oxford summer school... useful?

hey I would like to know whether going on a summer school for a week to study medicine at oxford will give me an advantage? I don't think it's something really important and I doubt if the admissions tutors will ever consider that, but when i visited the sutton trust website, it is written that:

"Evaluation by the National Foundation for Educational Research has demonstrated that attending a Sutton Trust Summer School significantly increases the chances of an individual being offered a place at that university. Out of the 64 students who attended very first Sutton Trust Summer School, mainly from homes where neither parent had been to university, 16 were offered conditional places and 14 were accepted to Oxford in autumn 1998. We were very pleased with the final degree tally: four graduated with firsts, seven gained 2:1s and three gained 2:2s. Overall, one third of students who attend our summer schools are offered places at the university where they attended summer school. "

I would really like to have an answer from ppl who got accepted at oxford and who have been on a summer school there

I went on a summer school before I went to Oxford (not the sutton trust one) and found it really really useful. It's not really a question of it being an advantage as far as looking good to admissions tutors but it gave me at least a real insight into the types of things that they were looking for, what was expected of you at interview etc, how it was structured and how I could best prepare - books I should read etc. It's also a really good chance to have a look around Oxford, see if you like the place and whether you could see yourself studying here.

As for me, I probably wouldn't have applied without the summer school, or if I had I doubt I would have got in since I knew so little about the requirements etc. The way I see it, it can't do any harm.

I originally wanted to go to Cambridge, but i was on holiday for their summer school so went to the Oxford Sutton Trust one instead. Decided i liked it there much better, so applied and got an offer (Maths, Oriel) for this October.

The summer school itself wasnt brilliant - we had to wear dog tag things all the time and they were ridiculously strict about boys and girls going into each others room. The academic side was good - picked up a few new things that gave me a headstart on my A2 courses and also met vaguely 'like-minded' people who i've been able to phone up and ask for help on homework etc. It gave me lots of stuff to ponce about on my personal statement too (i wrote something like "it stretched me to think in ways alien to any previous teaching"...crap like that). They also had an on-going team competition thing running that my team won so i mentioned that as a sort of showing i was good enough n whatever..

As to whether it helps to get in, it definitely isnt a bad thing. At my school we had four apply to Oxbridge and only myself and the other guy who went on the summer school got in. Perhaps a coincidence, but you never know.

My girlfriend went on the Sutton Trust one (to do classics) and had a great time. She's now reading Classics at Wadham.

Ditto. I think I went on the same one, and it was incredibly helpful. I hadn't considered applying before I went on it (although most people at my school went on to uni, not all that many went to traditionally 'good' ones) but the summer school showed me that it wasn't as elite or snobby as I thought, and that I might as well give it a shot.
Also you'll have a lot of fun, I did when I was there. On a random side note, I've also just applied for a job as a student mentor for the sutton trust summer schools

I did the sutton trust law summer school last year and have now got an offer to study there, so from my point o view it helped :-D I think it's defintily something worthwhile, even if you do use it just to mention on a personal statement since it shows committment to the subject etc, and it was the first question asked in both my interviews

I went on a summerschool for Classics, and it was odd, as I was practically the only person not doing Class Civ - but it showed me I didn't have to. It won't give you an advantage per se, but I think it is worth doing it, even just for the experience. The Sutton Trust ones are impeccably well organised, and the student helpers will do almost anything to help you!

It seems that all the summer schools, or at least those I have found are for students at FE Colleges or State Schools only. Can anyone tell me of any open to private school students. I'd really like to go on one. Thanks

The university/government/charity run ones seem to be as part of "access" initiatives, so limited to those from the maintained sector... I don't know of any available to independent sector students.

But there are some commercial (NB involving £££s & some information that may require pinches of salt*) ones that don't seem to have such criteria and use Oxford colleges as a base e.g.:
http://www.oxbridgeprograms.com/ (mostly americans though)
http://www.oxford-royale.co.uk/ (lots of English as a foreign language but some other courses)

*gee - you get to visit "the Oxford Radcliffe Hospital" - would that be the John Radcliffe or now closed Radcliffe Infirmary?
I think a truly more authentic experience might be getting knocked over by a cyclist in Oxford and taken there in an ambulance... or do they supply the patient for you to visit too?
