Increasing chances of getting my FPAS of choice

I'm in my 2nd year of medical school and I'm intercalating next year. How can I get the FPAS of my choice? What extracurricular activities should I be doing?

For maximising score:

Come in the top decile of your year (43/43)
Get a 1st in your intercalated year (4/5 (5 is only for a PhD))
Publish twice before FPAS applications close (2/2)
Do as well as possible in the SJT (as high as possible/50)

Best way would probably be to try and find a mentor who publishes a lot, maybe has a review held back that they simply don't have the time to do. These seem to have the fastest turn around time but still involve a lot of work so maybe aim to do one over a holiday.

From there if you can develop a relationship with said mentor you can develop your own projects or continue to publish reviews for them, this can also lead to presentations etc which will come in handy when applying to specialist training.
