I'm not sure I'll have to look up whether I can use eucalyptus. I don't think I can use peppermint oil but not sure about eycalyptus. In the meantime, cheers, honey and lemon. Thanks. *wanders off downstairs to boil the kettle*.

trying to stay away from caffeine (couldn't drink black tea anyway *shudders* it sounds awful)
do you think hot chocolate would work if made with hot water, not milk?

you've reminded me about this facial steamer i've got actually. it's meant to unclog pores on your face to make your skin nice, but does the same job as a bowl of water with a towel. thanks for reminding me, I must dig it out if I can find it!
Any warm drink and a long sleep, hope you feel better soon, i had this last week and it was awful :frown:
thanks muchly. I had stomach bug last week - was vomiting loads. Now I've got this nasty cold! I think I must have walked under a ladder by mistake or something recently lol.

cheers for the advice

If you can have glycerin (sp?) then buy some from Boots and put it in your honey and lemon, it makes it all... difficult to describe, but it reduces friction on your throat as it coats it. Hope you feel better soon!
I've never heard of glycerin...thanks I'll look it up and see if I can take some.

lol I must start making a list of what to send hubby to the pharmacy for!

For the sore throat, get some ice-cream or sorbet and keep eating it whenever your throat really hurts, as it will numb the pain.

The alcohol, will kill any bacterial or more likely viral infection in the cells lining the throat, it should also kill some of the cells that are swollen thus alleviating the pain. Not only that but if you drink enough of it the cold Xena is suffering with is magically alleviated too

Coughs and Colds

Pregnancy can cause your mucous membranes to swell. This can make it more difficult to get rid of coughs, colds, etc. Prevention is key here. Eat well, and get plenty of rest and exercise. Also avoid people who are contagious if possible.

Suggestions:

# Well balanced diet
# Increase Vitamin C foods
# Eating garlic or onions can help with infections
# Zinc and Vitamin C supplements will help increase your resistance
# B vitamins help if you are under stress
# Use a humidifier
# Use Aconite 6X every two hours for 24 hours at the first sign of a cold
# Allium Cepa 6C three times daily for a streaming head cold
# Eucalyptus, lavender, lemon and tea tree: 2 drops pf each oil into a bowl of water, inhale steam for 10 minutes Do not use in conjunction with homeopathic remedies.

Recipes:

# Herbal Decoction for colds:

4 Cloves
1 teaspoon coriander seeds
a few slices of fresh ger
1 pints of water
a slice of lemon
honey

Add the spices to the water, bring to a boil and simmer for 20 minutes. Add the lemon and simmer for a further 5 minutes. Strain and sweeten with honey. Drink a hot cup of this every 2 hours.

Cold Tea:

Peppermint
Chickweed
Echinacea
Blackberry leaves

Mix equal parts of the herbs in a container and take a heaping teaspoon into a tea bag. Steep in boiling water for 10 minutes. Sweeten with honey. You can drink this as often as needed for cold symptoms.

No worries, they do honey and lemon flavour too. You can take it like you'd take cough syrup too, just from a spoon, although it doesn't taste particularly tempting it's not horrific!

Unfortunately I caught it from my daughter. I'm so jealous of her taking Calpol though haha.

that website has some good suggestions though cheers.

Sejanus - I have some ice-pops in the fridge. Definitely gonna try them thanks my throat is still hurting.

Sidhe - I can't take alcohol but thanks anyway

Oh I see, sorry, Gargle TCP then, should do the same thing. Vitamin B12 has been shown to help with colds both their duration and stopping you from getting them in the first place, have a few marmite sandwiches, should give you about 150% of your RDA.

The importance of Vit C though is greatly overrated, I have it on good medical authority that it's supposed benefits are not supported by medical trials. the story of the rise of Vit C though is a long and interesting one.

having never tried marmite before, I guess this is a good time to find out whether or not I'm a love-it or a hate-it kinda person? lol
