I tried to dye my hair purple witha crap semi permanent one once, but as I have reasonably dark brown hair, it didn't change it at all. So unless you have really light hair, it won't work unless you go to the hairdressers.

You should try 'Directions' hair dye - it's much much better than any of the generic box dyes from chemists. It comes in a little plastic tub and you can get it from gothy shops and sort of asian shops sometimes. The colours are really vibrant and they don't fade as much as the box dyes do...

I've died my hair purple a few times, doing it again tonight in fact

I have black hair, so I use Garnier Nutrisse pre lightener (makes my hair go a scary shade of yellow), then I usually use either L'Oreal Feria 3D or the Schwarzkopf Live colour ones. (Using the latter today)

I find that the L'Oreal one is good, gives a nice colour, but after about a month it goes kinda red, then eventually orange and I have to dye over or get it cut out.

Haven't used the Schwarzkopf one in a while, so can't remember if it fades or not. We'll see

there's one they sell called select in superdrug i think? it has pictures on the front and it's about £3.99, it works on any shade of hair but my friend used it and the purple was purple at first and then went a pinky purple! i'll ask her what it was called but it really works

I have dark brown hair and my hair goes nicely purple, though it's red at the moment.
I used the Herbal Essences one, worked well and made my hair super soft

I have dark brown hair and used to dye my hair between purple and red. I found Schwarzkopf to be totally and utterly useless, as it would run for like a week after dying and fade quickly. Maybe this is just my hair type but there ya go

L'Oreal Feria on the other hand was always fantastic. The colour lasts 1-2months, which is more than enough for a £6 bottle from Superdrug that covered all my hair - which is thick, curly, and back then reached my hips. The colour lasted for quite some time but would gradually fade. I eventually dyed my hair black to get it back to brown; I'm now back to dark brunette but if I'm standing under a bright light you can still see a strip of black from where it's growing out (!), I last dyed my hair 1yr+7months ago with Feria.

I used the Schwarzkopf Cosmic Blue on mine. Water was blue in the shower for a few days but it hasn't faded much yet. I do have pretty light hair so the colour came out good, the downside is that roots growing back in means there's a weird green/gray tint in certain light now.

I would like to ask for some advice on hair dye. I was thinking of dying my hair purple with the Schwarzkopf Live Coulour XXL Wild Highlights dye, and I just wanted to ask if this dye is good or if there is an alternative I can use which is better. I'm not prepared to pay loads for it though, but I don't want my hair to look rubbish either.

I tried that. It just went red. I have q. red hair though. Haha.

That's why pre-lighteners exist.

I used Directions a couple of weeks ago - well, my hairdresser did, since I was too much of a wimp to bleach it myself, having heard all of the horror stories about what frequently goes. We mixed some 'lavender' with some 'plum', which resulted in Cadbury's purple, and I love it! Unfortunately, it runs a bit in the first few washes, so make sure you cover pillows, clothes, sofas etc. if you're going to let your hair drip-dry. I was also really scared of going out in the rain... It dyes your skin, too, if you don't use a barrier like Vaseline or (better still, I find) Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector around your hair line/on your ears - both when dyeing and through the first few washes. However, after about 3 washes, it's fine. It isn't quite as vivid as it was a fortnight ago, but still I think it'll last another 2 weeks or so before I feel desperate to have it re-dyed (and then the roots might need bleaching anyway). I wash my hair every night or every other night.

You should try it!

directions is pretty good. though

I've had purple in mine before and by far the best was
"special effects - deep purple"
runs like crazy for the first few washes, and will dye almost anything it comes into contact with lol. use bleach to get it off your sink and bath etc

anyway
just bleach your hair, shampoo it out, apply the dye, then use a leave in conditioner.
your hair will need to be pretty light to get the best result.

Colour starts out very dark and will look almost black, it'll take one or two shampoo washes before it goes to what its supposed to. Should easily last 3-4 weeks without fading, providing you put it on straight after bleaching.

You can get it here

http://haircrazy.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_7&products_id=15
for £9. it's reusable and you can probably get at minimum of two applications even if you have longish hair. so if you want to top up the colour after a little while just add a tiny bit of the dye to your regular shampoo. Sites legit I've ordered from there a few times and never had any problems what-so-ever

I used the Schwarzkopf one last weekend, Ive got medium brown hair and mine looks fairly purple now. Its not faded too much and its pretty similar to the colour that was shown on the box.

dye tends to work better (ie show up more and last longer) the more you use it.. it may not show up too great the first go, but the next time, i'll show up really well..

just a pointer there =)

oh, and i use uhm garnier semi permanent.. i have some purple stuff.. haven't tried that yet.. but the black stuff works great =)

I used that to dye my hair and for the first week my hair was purple but faded extremely fast and is now a red-brown.

You have to bleach it first.
