Don't listen to this person!!!

Bikes are a massive part of Durham - they're all over the place! Although yes it's hilly you will get used to it and it's good exercise anyway

Cobbles - hmmm yes, because there are sooooo many cobbles in Durham! Actually there are only TWO cobbled areas that I can think of - on South Bailey (by St Johns and St Cuthberts colleges) and on South Street (where there is nothing of any importance).....so unless you plan to cycle constantly in these areas I can't see them being a large problem!

Anyway, Durham is a small place and as such a bike isn't REALLY needed - but if you have one and have the ability to bring one with you then it would be helpful, especially if you're going to a hill college as it's useful to nip into town and back if needed. Also if you're doing sports they are handy for getting to Maiden Castle/the Racecourse/various Boathouses/etc. with

Most people just walk....(warning,Durham drivers can be evil btw)....

I have a friend who has a bike and she uses it when she wakes up at quarter to 9 and has a 9am at Elvet Riverside,so I guess it could be useful if you're late.Personally,I've managed quite well without one.

No they're not. A vast majority of students don't have a bike, it's nothing like Oxford or Cambridge. Might be useful if you live in Gilesgate or somewhere silly like that though.

I didn't say the vast majority of students had a bike did I? I said that bikes are a massive part of Durham....and this I'm talking about in terms of the size of Durham....walk around and look at the bike lock areas all around Durham - there are loads and they are always full! The science site is RAMMED with bikes constantly.

Anyway, if you look at the original poster, they say they are a big fan of cycling, so for someone who loves to cycle then it's a good idea for them to bring their bike! It's not essential no, but of the people I know who are "cycle friendly" they all have bikes, or at least have had one at some point during their degree.

If the option is there to bring a bike, you should

No many people use them, but the one's that do save about 20 minutes a day and can get places faster if need be.

Before my bike was STOLEN, I enjoyed a combination of cycling and jogging with my bike (when too many people/cars or hills) were around to cycle properly. There are long streets though, that make it worth your while.

Random and maybe mildly stalkerish but did I see you today carrying a suitcase towards the university library?Or was it an imposter?

My bike was also stolen at the end of last term :frown:

Though don't let this put you off - I have known very very few people to have bikes stolen, and I was stupid enough to use a very cheap lock and lock it up in an area where all the other bikes looked CRAP and mine was pretty new haha, oh well £200 down the drain eh?
