So I was hoping to get a group going for the new higher sociology course this year. If anyone has advice on what kind of questions could come up for unit 2, what to include in essays e.t.c that would be great cause I'm super struggling! But yeah would be nice to just help each other get through the exam.

Well what else could they really ask us do you think? If I was to guess I reckon Goldthorpe/Blanden may come up or some evaluation points. Can we be asked on another issue other than socio-economic inequality? Do we need to know action theories on socio-economic inequality?

they can ask you about the inequalities in education (differential achievement) i think, so it would either have to be on that or socio economic inequality i presume. i only know marxism and functionalism in relation to the socio economic inequalities is this the same with yourself?

Yeah I only know marxism and functionalism. Where you guys taught other theories? Feminist theory on socio-economic inequality came up in my prelim so took us all a bit by surprise. What theories were you taught for education? If they can specify that then surely there's high chances that will come up since it hasn't before. (Thanks for the quick reply I know its like half 2 in the morning)

We haven't really went over feminism for the socio economic in fact we haven't really covered it much so I'm hoping its not going to appear in this years paper all we've really done is marx and functionalism. For education we were taught about symbolic interactionism and functionalism. I'm quite confident with section 1 and 3 but culture and identity not so much, what kind of things have you done for that? and haha i know my life around exam times consists of staying up all night cramming in studying - the joys haha!

Were you not taught any other theories for education? Can they not specify do you reckon? I'm the exact same culture and identity seems solid to me. I've just studied like feminist, functionalist (still to do marxist and an action theory) to the formation of identity, the Cohen study and will briefly look over power and status and hope for the best. What have you done?

no that was the only ones we were taught for education, i think it would be unlikely for them to specify they would probably ask for two contrasting theories but I'm not 100%, my teacher thinks if they were going to ask about education they would phrase it like "other than socio economic inequality pick another topic and compare contrasting theories" something like that instead of specifically asking for education incase other schools have done different topics. For culture and identity we did a structural and action view on socialisation, culture and sub cultures and the two studies we did were Cohen and the drug takers.

We were only taught one study! I'm freaking out, so screwed if another study comes up, do you have an essay written for the drug takers you could possibly send me? I don't know much about perspectives on cultures and subcultures either jeez. Is a marxist view a contrasting perspective to functionalist in terms of education?

i don't have an essay but i have a print out from my teacher about the study i will try and message you it but im not sure if it will work as it is a photo haha. For education the contrasting theories are symbolic interactionism and functionalism, i never wrote about marx.

I noticed earlier in the thread you said you've only done 1 study... There should be 2 mandatory studies in the syllabus, has your teacher/lecturer went over the other?

Apologies but the mobile site is murder to use. 😂

My teacher doesnt really show up to our classes cause he's busy so we havent went over much but no theres been no mention of another study in culture and identity. He insisted Cohen would come up, he is the most stressful person to be around.

It is over! We are all free from the burden that is higher sociology, I thought the exam was quite decent to be honest. I wasn't a massive fan of the study question in culture and identity and ran out of time and so i think ive lost a few marks in the exam but hopefully nothing detrimental. Overall feeling pretty good How did it go for everyone else?

The exam went well for me I'm sure. Obviously we'll find out in August.
I'm sure the just the women was the culture and identity I might be wrong.... I feel like I never really got a chance to relate to much of the theories that I had learned in the first section but hey ho'

I hope everyone gets what they wish for in regards to the exam. 😊✌
