I have had orthodontic treatment sadly for 4 years. I have had headgear, train track braces, and now on some sort of retainers..

it wasnt painful though... i dont know if thats a generic thing though.

I wore it just at night for 1 year. I did have a jaw realignment. I had to wait 1 1/2 years.
i've been going to the orthodentist since i was 11, and back then i was told i'd have jaw realignment at some point, and i'll finally (fingers crossed) be having it in june, a month before im 21  i haven't already had it because they were 'waiting to see if i'd stopped growing', and then kept saying 'my teeth weren't in the right position' (i've had braces for 3 years now).
i don't think the delay was to do with waiting lists and they were just fobbing me off, but who knows

mine wasn; too bad, they thought I would end up having a tooth or two out but didn't in the end, i hate the dentist so much though now I can stay well away!
Mine wasn't too bad (apart from a personality clash). I had to wait about 6 months to get teeth surgically removed then had to wait about another 6 months after that to get braces. In total it took about 4 years (from getting put on the waiting list to ending my treatment).
I was on the waiting list for about 2 years and then I had a god awful retainer for about 6 months braces for a year and a half which included having 'implants' in my gums (screws drilled into the bone under my gums)

Less than a year later and my teeth have bloody moved back anyway!
I was on the waiting list for 18 months despite the fact that I didn't want anything done.

Suffice to say that when my time arrived, and I was advised that I would have to have four teeth removed, in order that one tooth MIGHT look better in the future, I placed the words "off" and "piss" into an appropriate order...

My god where are you all based?

I had to wait 2 weeks to have 6 teeth out an the another month because i had exams for the braces, this is on the nhs but in scotland
I have been on the waiting list for three yeras. I got a letter in the other day saying i was on top of the list but when i phoned to get a appointment the first one i could get was in July. So by the first time i go and see them i would of been on the witing list for 3 and 1/2 years. This is on the NHS. The nearest orthodontits to me is a hour and a half drive away.

Mmm, you need to be more persistant! Talk to your dentist about referring you as an emergency patient. Just say it's ruining your confidence, and you feel you can't enjoy yourself etc... Worked for me  haha, though, even then it took 6 months.. :/
sorry but its kind of on thee subject so i need to ask a qiuck question
i went to my first appoinment today its a 45minute driveand i thought i was going to get my mold and X-rays but all she did was measuring and talking. she told me that she'll have to re-refere me to another specialist and will talk to my dentist.i got told i will need them on for 2 years
how long will it be until i actually get my braces on?
and when i have my appointment with that ortho will that be the fitting? thankyou
starchild

ive had all that too :frown:
sleeping in the headgear is the WORST.

I had to wait for about 2-3 years for mine, and ive had them for about 3.5 years.
i should have had them out this september but because they built a new hospital its been delayed and i am sooo annoyed!
hi, thought i'd share my experience of orthodontic-ness

basically, i'm in the middle of orthodontic treatment, i waited for about two, two and a half years roughly. unfortunately it's a bit of a long process, after i eventually got to the top of the waiting list i had several different appointments one for various x-rays and measurements, discussions with surgeons etc (i've got to have my jaws broken) then eventually some moulds taken of my teeth and photographs.

i had my wisdom teeth and four other teeth taken out all at once over xmas 09, then i february i got my braces. i've been told that my whole treatment will be about 18 months to 2 years, so i'm expecting to have my jaw surgery next year at some point - i have an open bite so i need to have my top jaw brought forward and widened also as my bottom jaw is larger than my top that will be adjusted also. if that all goes to plan then i will have braces remove 6 months afterwards and it will all hopefully be worth it and rid me of an awful smile and teeth!

seriously though, i know it's a bit of a pain waiting because you just want to get on with it, but it will come around eventually.

i wish you all good luck with you dental adventures
how do u get on the list? i've had severe jaw pain but they won't do surgery until i go thru all the steps like trying facial exericises and stuff. I have pain and my face also looks bad (underdeveloped jaw and overbite) and i know surgery will sort it all out. how do i get on the list and start this prcedure? because right now they want to give me a bite splint but i just want the jaw surgery.

i got on the list because my dentist referred me to a maxillofacial/orthodontic consultant at my local hospital then they decided if i qualified for treatment, only thing i can suggest is if you ask your dentist to refer you?

sorry i can't be of more help to you
can anyone help me?
i had my brace put on when i turned 15, i lived in a different west london but my dentist was in south london. depsite the fact i wa in west london they referred me to an orthodontist in south london. I went for a couple of years but then life got in the way eg i had an ederlygrandparent to care for, work and college and couldnt make my appointments, i missd a couple of appoitments and was told i couldnt come back to finish my orthodontic treatment. I tried to get on the waiting list over west london but no oneseems to be able to help me. i am now 22 years old and have a really bad broken brace stuck on my teeth and no one seems to be able to help me. i wa told i still qualify for the treatment because i was under 18 when it was put on. what can i do? and who can i speak to about getting it fixed? its ******* me offnow and my jaw is really sore!!

go and see a dentist, they can't leave you like that ,it is unethical. If it is hurting your jaw you should see someone urgently. Hope you get sorted out soon.
I got put on the list when I was 6, begun treatment when I was 11, had a treatment that didn't work for 2 years, gave up on that, got train track braces when I was 13, and a sagittal split osetomy (making my jaw longer) this summer (I'm 16), with braces off after recovery.

I was on the waiting list for about 18 months. I had major problems and was advised that I would need to consider jaw realignment surgery too.
I did and started my Orthodontic treatment. Had my surgery 18 months into treatment and then was offered surgery again. Had it in September and the BAXXtards FXXked up - gave me an open bite and I had it done again a week later. I had 5 mini implants inserted into my gums in surgery and then my ortho removed them and put two lower down. There is NICE guidance on these babies and I should have been given a leaflet telling me that NICE don't necessarily recommend them as there has not been enough research into the benefits. Evidence suggests that the NHS are SXXT at orthodontic/maxillofacial surgery. MY ADVICE - When you get seen make sure you ask how good your surgeon and or orthodontist is. And make sure you check out the information they give you. They are not giving us treatment for free for the sake of it = they want to do research on all of us unfortunate people that haven't been blessed with the best teeth.
