What do you mean by phobia? How are you scared by it? What do you think the cassette tape will do to you?

It's just an irrational fear. Or stemming from a past childhood or subconscious experience. Not as if the cassette/seaweed is going to jump up and kill the person or anything.
i have a panic attack when i see it, i run out into the road screaming, so it is of danger to me. seaweed wise i don't go in the water and the problem is i was making progress until the other week i had to walk down a road where there was loads of it, since then it's always been on my mind and watching spiderman 3 also brought it up because of the web stuff looking like what i see cassette tape/seaweed in my mind.
Haha
Sorry, but that does sound very amusing and random.
It's an irrational phobia, just like any other phobia really.
The best thing you can do really is keep away from cassettes and seaweed, which shouldn't be too hard. Or you can try and face your fear. Hypnotism might work if it really bothers you.
Just remind yourself that those objects can't really hurt you. They're not alive and they're not evil. I don't know what else to suggest!
what, i'm a troll? howw???
your choice but hey, can someone please close this if all i'm gonna get is crap as i have a ridiculous and completely irrational phobia?

If you have a ridiculous and completely irrational phobia then shouldn't you really be speaking to your GP and/or a psychiatrist rather than school/university students?

Use your initiative.

Watch out, there's a Rick Astley audio tape right behind you!

No I'm being serious if this really is an issue for you then you should see a doctor.

I've seen some rather wacky threads on this website, but this one really takes the biscuit.
yes, but in the meantime, if you read my original post, i was asking if anyone else shares this phobia as there is nothing else on the internet.

Nope it looks like you're a unique case. You should be very proud of yourself.

hahaha. sorry, but thats so pathetic. What the hell is a bit of tape going to do? ffs get over it. "panic attack" hahahahaha

That’s a bit mean, everyone has genuine problems and fears, its unfair to have a go at someone if they fear something, you yourself may fear something as well?

Best place to start it to try and edge your self in, what I mean by this is, slowly get used to the idea of it etc talk more to you later about it on msn, think leave it off the board for this topic
OP: clearly there are some people who are just making fun of you here, and so far no one has actually said that they share the same phobia as you - why don't you just go to a GP to find out whether there is anything that they can give you to calm your nerves or perhaps see a psychiatrist to find out where this phobia stems from for you

Psychiatrist is more for self harming and more mental disorders( I know that bit) you might get referred to a councillor which maybe more suited to your needs more informal but also more tailed a psychiatrist is more specialist.

I've heard of people being scared of seaweed, but never of cassette tapes.

If it does really bother you, go see the old GP. I once heard of a guy who could help people conquer phobias using hypnosis. And I heard of some kind of method of mentally putting whatever it is (seaweed, cassette tape) into a little box, and imagining putting it as far away from you as you can. Sort of banishing it in a way?

Dunno whether that would help, sorry I'm no expert!

Get your GP to refer you to a clinical psychologist...they deal with phobia's. Although i don't think your GP will actually do that as this phobia is not seriously affecting your life in a major way e.g. can't leave the house, can't sleep, can't eat etc.
I use to have a slight phobia (if such a thing exists) of seaweed. I wouldn't go in the sea if there was lots of seaweed and the feeling of it all around my ankles really freaked me out because it felt like snakes or worms or something. haha that sounds so stupid when i read it out loud but yeh i sort of know where the OP is coming from if shes genuine.

With phobias I've heard theres 3 ways to deal with them: gradually build up your confidence in little steps, jump in at the deep end and make yourself experience the worst possible scenario you can imagine, or just ignore it and try and minimize its impact on your life

I find seaweed creepy when I stand on it but I think it's because the sea water in Swansea is black as the hobs of Hell and so it's more a case of treading on the unknown than a fear of the seaweed itself. Plus I'm fine eating it on sushi..

To be fair though, I don't really see how you could have experience of "running out into the road screaming" when confronted with a cassette tape, unless someone decided to throw one at you for laughs. They're both such avoidable phobias that it's hardly worth asking for tips on avoiding them. Just don't go back in time to the 80's. Or to the beach..
