Biology Extended Essay - Sports Physiology

Urmm just a few questions about the extended essay, sorry I had to make a separate thread :s-smilie:.

1) Should I do an experiment or not? As you get no marks for the experiment, some teachers say that I should just use a variety of other data. The problem is finding a big enough range of appropriate data, and then interpreting it in an original way that it was not intended to be used for.

2) Is it a good idea to do physiology rather than microbiology, ecology etc.? (Just wanted to make sure I'd be interested in the topic)

3) Erm the one my teacher suggested was to examine the effects of different amounts of glucose on heart rate during excercise (i.e. get 10 people to excercise with a control, with a hypertonic glucose solution, isotonic solution etc.). Do you think this could work? Would I get enough good data to get a good mark on the EE (REALLY need it)? and do you think it's too simplistic (earlier, the same teacher said measuring pulses was a bit too primary school :s-smilie:)

Would appreciate any advice, however limited, Thank you!

hey, a friend in my class did something very similar to this for her EE last year - shes some crazy olympic cycling person. anyway i do think you get marks for doing an experiment, because there is a criteria on how you approach the problem. also, doing your own experiment means that you will have a lot to comment on it later in terms of limitations, strengths, etc, and how these influenced your results. if you collect other people's data, i think you will have less to say about these points.
may i suggest varying the time/strain of the exercise and do a bleep test?
sorry i can't think of a suitable title or anything, i personally detest biology lol.

Just one point to address about physiology: If you're experimenting on humans which you are, there are sooo many variables that are out of your control and it'll be extremely difficult to keep everything constant and change the desired variable. Take that into consideration.

I know, but that's the same with ecology and really any experiment within biology except microbiology, which is kind of boring :s-smilie: Thanks, though

Hi, I also like to do my EE on human and sports physiology but I am finding it impossible to find a topic that I could actually carry out.
Im hoping that since you posted this a few years ago that you might have some advice you could give me?
