I think Taken was my first 18+ movie, I think the rating is too high though
According to the BBFC (who decide film ratings), the torture scene was literally the only reason for the 18 rating, and that the film would've been a 15 without it, so even the people who gave it that rating agree that it's a mild '18'.
When it was in cinemas, the torture scene was replaced with a tamer version, and it was rated 15 (everything else was the same as in the 'Extended Harder Cut' home release).
I agree that an 18 is too harsh and that it should be a 15 - it was rated 15 in Ireland according to the logos on my DVD copy, which is rare as a lot of my films have higher Irish ratings than UK rating.
(I remember watching it on TV around the age of 13/14 and thinking 'Is this it?'. Admittedly it's still a brutal film but nowhere near as bad as the 18 rating made me think it was)

That's quite interesting to know actually, I definitely wouldn't put it up there with other 18 rated movies. Die Hard is another one which, given the standard, I wouldn't have rated 18

I think that the fact that the sequels had lower ratings while the films had not that much difference in violence shows a lot

The BBFC seem to agree with you - Die Hard was actually downgraded to 15 in 2008 (for DVD/home release) and in 2013 (for a cinema re-release), although the 2013 home releases still carry an 18 rating for some odd reason  (it may be due to bonus features being rated 18, although I own this version, albeit the German release with a 16 rating. and none of the bonuses seem worthy of an 18 to me)

You come across as knowing a fair bit about films, I take it you're a film enthusiast?

First 18 film I watched was probably Kill Bill (Vol 1) when I was around 12.. and I can't really remember the first 15 film, I think it was something like Love Actually when I was 11

In France, only porn movies are 18+. I unfortunately don't remember the title of the first one I saw. It was in a zoo, the girl had an orange dress, and there were two guys... :moon:

Trainspotting. I was six when it came out, but I think I was about 8 when I watched it. It was at my uncle's house while he was babysitting. I had nightmares about that baby crawling across the ceiling for ages!

I think The Exorcist when I was about 7 or 8 or at least that's the first one I remember vividly.

Haha I remember when I was about ten noticing in the TV mag that it was on really late on channel 5. I had this little telly in my bedroom and I stayed up to watch it really quietly in secret, then sat up for the rest of the night with all the lights on.
