Descriptive writing techniques

Hello, I'm in currently in Y11 studying iGCSE language. However, one thing I need to work on is my descriptive writing. I've been told I've great vocabulary and punctuation but lack direction and technique.
So here's my problem: when I'm doing descriptive pieces, I often turn it into a narrative story instead which eliminates the purpose of descriptive writing. But, I find it extremely difficult to do so. How can I achieve this? Like I don't add speech into it or anything, so I can't comprehend how it's similar to a story.

Have you guys got any tips or techniques I could use that would be helpful?

Focus on the five senses and describe what you see, hear, smell etc.
