The general consensus in Southeast Asia, particularly in the Philippines and Vietnam rank UK schools in this order:

Tier 1 - Oxford and Cambridge (often perceived as Harvard/Yale's equal)

Tier 2 - LSE and Imperial (perceived as lower ivys + Stanford, Berkeley, MIT, Caltech)

Tier 3 - UCL, Warwick (equivalent of Duke, Johns Hopkins, Rice, top Liberal Arts colleges like Amherst and Williams)

Tier 4 - Nottingham, Bristol, Durham, York, st Andrews, Bath, New Castle Upon Tyne Manchester and Cardiff (equivalent of Michigan, UVa, UCLA and the like)

Tier 5 - Liverpool, Birmingham, Leeds, Lancaster, Leicester, City University, Glasgow (equivalent of USC, Purdue, CMU, Illionois, U of Florida and the like)

i agree with except: take out Newcastle out of top4 along with Cardiff and put in Leeds and Edinburgh. but then again i guess you could also put LSE and Imperial into Tier 1 ...because they really are that good. in America not everyone choose HYP over Stanford, MIT, Caltech and "lower ivys".

oh and also Bristol into Tier 3.

Lol-joker, stopped being biased towards your subject and do it overall.

Overall Oxbridge > LSE and Imperial

Overall Bristol, Warwick, Durham, UCL are all pretty equal.

The rest can fight it out amongst themselves, because I don't really care about them.

So I propose:

Tier 1
Oxbridge

Tier 2
LSE/Imperial

Tier 3
Warwick, Bristol, Durham,UCL

Tier 4
Whatever

EDIT: I think most people will agree ILIGAN has got it badly badly wrong. City on the same level as Birmingham? Manchester with Bristol? Just no. That's all that could be said. And arbp. How you could then endorse that???? Did you read it.

Reply 46

Up to 9 made sense. I disagree with most everything after that! And that is why prestige can never really be ranked. Way too subjective. I'd called that utter trash past that point but you'd stand by it.

ILIGAN mentioned that, that is the point of view of people in his country and areas near to that. That is what they think and it might be possible that certain international students feel that way about the prestige of universitites. Its their opinion:smile:.

If we're focusing on the top universities for prestige, maybe three or four tiers within the top ten are too many. I'd say there are two tiers at the top (no order implied):

Tier 1: Cambridge, Oxford, Imperial, LSE
Tier 2: UCL, St Andrews, Warwick, Durham, Bristol, Edinburgh

Thoughts?

Don't have too much of a problem with that.

thing is Adam..youd be suprised on how many people outside TSR view some of these Unis...for example in my school (big independent one in London) Manchester is extremly popular...and lots of people are going there...Durham on the other hand isnt respected as much and i only know 1 person whos accepted them as insurance...obviously i dont share this view and would rather pick Durham over Manchester...but i doubt most people in England would :s-smilie:

and regarding Brum+ city etc...well i wasnt really concerned with that Tier so no i didnt really look into it properly.

No I think you're wrong about this. This is not a TSR thing. Durham just is more prestigious than Manchester.

End of.

At my school no one in their right mind would have picked Manchester (clearly upper third tier university) over Durham (clearly upper second tier). Unless they particularly liked Manc as a city. Although most people didn't care about that, they just wanted to go to an elite university. That was the type of school it was.

I think this is a nationwide thing. Why do you think most of these opinions exist on TSR? And why do you think most people on TSR consistently rate Durham as being better than Manc? Because that's what people think up and down the country! If anything, if you notice arbp, Durham suffers from a lack of respect on this forum, people always going on about how overrated it is.

I should add- I'm really surprised that Durham receives a bad press at an independent/public school. These are the type of schools that love universities such as Bristol and Durham the most. It was always stressed to me that they were better than the red-bricks for career prospects.

i think Durham is like marmite...you either love it or hate it :p: (personally i love it but im not sure about the rest of UK as i said)

Haha. Ye so true.

Some people take it how it is, and they like what they see. Other people just think it's an overrated, stuffy institution which doesn't deserve to be considered an elite university any more. (I hope for my sake employers take the former view).

Why doesn't Bristol get some of this flack as well!

Abrp- the institution which surprisingly a lot of people haven't heard of up and down the country is UCL. Durham is not the one you should be going after. If anything actually, nationwide it almost receives too much respect, being seen as a clear 3rd to Oxbridge when clearly it's only level with Warwick, Bristol, UCL etc..

Reply 55

I would say that after Oxbridge, LSE and Imperial: UCL, Warwick, Durham and Bristol DO seem to have the best REPUTATIONS (my subjective opinion of course), and then some others would follow. I'm not saying this is reputation is justified, I just get the impression these 4 unis are generally thought of as more prestigious than others near them. I'm not explaining myself very well...basically those 4 seem to be held in slightly higher regard than the likes of Manchester, Nottingham etc.

Reply 56

I always think UCL is a bit under-appreciated on TSR.
It consistently seems to come just behind ICL and LSE (almost unfairly as they are specialist institutions) but always seems to be put in a lower tier or even behind universities like Bristol or Durham. Generally why is this?

Lol. I think the OP gets the point! (Southampton is a pretty good uni btw:biggrin: )

southampton UNIVERSITY not southampton solent.

and comon reputation wont get you a job its up to the individual. Your just as likely going to get a job from any top 30 university with a 2:1 because that will only take you as far as the interview.

I wouldnt bash Newcastle (why New Castle??? ) as much as you have done. We have done very well and are well overdue for our Research Assessments.

The problem with tables is, they depend on a wide range of subjects, some unis do them, some dont

St Andrews and Durham are not as popular as some of the other unis as the towns (so what if Durham has a cathedral) are not very large. Durham especially has suffered with the number of attacks on students having risen sharply. There is a serious them and us attitude in Durham.

All tables are subjective to the reader. Many London universities get raped on some tables as people who did not consider London when making their choices. Likewise, many are pushed up as some people ONLY considered London.

The OP and other interested parties can continue, but when it comes down to it, it is just another table.

On second thought, another way to measure prestige would be to look at admission requirements and selectivity. The following list comes from Sunday Times 2006 data, but I would assume their upcoming rankings will have changed a bit. The entry requirements for St Andrews and Bath have jumped since last year, while some others have gone down.

1. Cambridge/Oxford (Tie)
3. LSE
4. Imperial
5. Warwick
6. Durham
7. St Andrews
8. Bath
9. Bristol
10. Nottingham/York (Tie)
