An onion is quite an unconventional and strange item to be used as a token of love, and is contrasted to the more stereotypical 'red roses' or satin hearts. However it arguably represents love far more accurately than a rose or heart. For e.g. it can 'blind you with tears' like a lover could. Enjambment is used throughout the stanzas and also the poem is in free verse-this could show the uncontrollable and free nature of love, which is arguably being undermined by fixed and rigid conventions like Valentines day where only certain forms of expressing love is considered acceptable. The poem also conveys a negative and brutal side of love. Think about the choice of language that reflect this(e.g. 'Lethal', 'knife' etc.)
