Hey guys,

I'm year 11 and it's about time to choose A levels for next year. Our school is running the scheme of doing 3 full A-levels, with some students having the option to take 4 A levels.

I want to study economics at uni; with LSE, Cambridge etc in mind. I am stuck between choosing 3 or 4 subjects, I am worried about the workload and my results being affected negatively if I take 4, but worried about my subject choices not being broad enough if I take 3.

Here are some potential combinations:

3 Subjects:
Maths, FM, Economics (+EPQ in Econ)
Maths, FM, History (+ EPQ in Econ)

4 Subjects:
Maths, FM, Economics, History (+ EPQ)
Maths, FM, Economics, Physics (+ EPQ)

Thoughts?

Look at the entry requirements for the courses - if they don't require 4, don't take 4. If you do choose a fourth one, choose one you'll enjoy because 4 a levels are really difficult and it's crucial for you to enjoy what you're doing. The EPQ would sort of make up for the lack of the fourth subject, as it counts as half an a level (if I remember correctly) good luck!

The problem is, as there i subject reform affecting my year, it seems most universities haven't yet responded to it, and so it seems annoying and difficult to decide.

a snippet from LSE's website....

"Thus a combination of Maths, Further Maths and one other subject is not seen as providing the required breadth of knowledge and skills."

For many schools they are now adopting a simple 3 A level system rather than the conventional 4, I wonder if unis will adjust this....
