    Which exam board is this?
I'm on Edexcel and we have themes of team sports, holidays or books to make the hypothesis' on. We were told the best method was to find a question you want to answer (eg does the weight of books affect how well it sells?) and then take a hypothesis from that (so the heavier the book, the more copies that are sold). Then we had to say how we would get the information and if it could be bias etc. (so from the top 40 selling books - secondary data then go get them and scales in a book shop/library and weigh them - primary data) plus say how we were going to try to prove the hypothesis (plot them on a scatter graph/ spearman's rank)
I can't think of any examples which use standard deviation but hopefully you get the idea.
