It's Just Not Even Funny Any More

Recently I've been having trouble sleeping, waking up at random times like 5:30 and taking ages to get to sleep. I'm not sure whether it's because my mind is too active or what, but does anybody know of any good solutions to getting a good nights sleep? E.g. Nightol? I'm desperate! Last night was a joke, I went to bed at 10:45 hoping to get a good nights sleep before our leavers ball. It took me till 3:30 to fall asleep, then I woke again at 5:30, before falling asleep again at 6:30, only to wake at 8:30.

So i've had two lots of two hours sleep, which i'm led to believe means my body doesn't even think a night has passed!

Thanks (in advance) for your help!

I second this. Regular exercise will sort you out ;yes;

Hmmm, well this inability to sleep followed 2 hours of club level badminton and a 2 mile run! Normally I play 2 hours a day, plus i've been at school all day, so i would think i should be physically tired enough to sleep. I mean, i'm knackered now, i just can't sleep! Are products like Nightol any good?

Time spent sleeping is time wasted. Count yourself lucky ;yes;

Do you know why you are unable to sleep? Perhaps as time passes you're worried about how late it is, that you won't have enough sleep for the next day unless you sleep now and keep yourself awake. For something like that if it becomes a constant problem, you may wish to speak to a doctor and get prescribed something. Even if you don't use them, they'll help you sleep knowing they're there if you need to use them.

Get toasted and pass out, hell it may work?

Exercise has helped my dodgy sleeping...but sleeping pills don't work on me! :frown:

Have you tried having a good massage before you try and sleep to relax you?

If it persists always worth a trip to the GP.

There was a programme here in Sweden on TV about a guy called "The Insomnia man" that slept at most 5 minutes per day. He was about 85-90 years old. He was cool.
Sorry don't have any tips.

Is there anything you might be particlularly stressed about atm? Has anything changed in your lifestyle recently that might be worrying you or making you restless?

Well i've got exams coming up, so they're bound to worry me a bit, but i don't really need to do that well in them...other than that, not much, oh, half got back with my half ex girlfriend? That might have something to do with it!

It might indeed. Have a think about it. If you've only 'half' got back with her, maybe some clarification of where you stand might ease your mind a bit, esp. if getting back with her wasn't your idea. :smile:

This question is asked so often they may as well just sticky it. Anyway, click on best threads ever and select insomnia, I'm too lazy to even cut and paste the URL's now :smile:

personally i've had insomnia problems for about 8 years now. it's medically diagnosed, but it always gets worse when i've got something on my mind.
i've found that drinking green tea, reflexology, a night of films/reading + warm bath + hot chocolate then straight to bed, and sleeping pills the size of golf balls are effective solutions in the short term.
if you wanna get it properly sorted out though you're gonna have to sort your problems: eg your half girlfriend. hurts to hear sometimes but you're either with her or you aren't. uncertainty about your status isn't good cos then there's no trust, or if there is it drips away slowly. relationship problems are best sorted out fast anyway.

I answered a post similar to this here : http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?p=7885563#post7885563

Although that person's reason for not sleeping was more of an anxiety thing and less of a general insomnia.

If you can't sleep because your mind is too active:
1) Don't exercise before bed (it wakes you up)
2) Don't watch TV for an hour before you go to bed
3) Read a really boring book- Atkins Physical Chemistry does it for me!
4) Have a hot bath
5) Write down anything that's worrying you
6) Take some hops and valerian- they won't MAKE you go to sleep, but they will relax you enough to make it easier.

If all else fails, go to the GP :smile:
