Would re-home but all the cats we have met at homing shows are 'troubled' older cats as the Cats Protection ladies put it and we need a starter cat as we are unfortunately not experienced enough to deal with a 'difficult' cat.

Kittens are preferred as that is what my family wants.
Does anyone know of any kittens for sale in the Essex area?
Google searches and Gumtree have not been fruitful

Have you tried preloved? There's normally loads of animals on there.

call them, tell them you are only interested in 6 - 8 week old kittens, and leave your number ...
when they come you visit them.

I hope you are lucky ...
