    Can someone please explain to me in a logical way of why the volume of air decreases in a spirometer.

    The volume of air only decreases in a spirometer if you use soda lime to absorb the carbon dioxide which you expire. If you look at spirographs where no soda lime was used, the total volume remains constant.
